A Bespoke Suit Is More Than Just Measurements. ✂️👔

Ever wondered what goes into creating a bespoke suit?
These photos take you behind the scenes at Carl Axen Clothier, from fabric selection and measurements to the preliminary fitting and the finished garment. Every bespoke suit begins with understanding the client. We discuss personal style, explore fabrics, and consider how the garment should look, feel, and fit.

Then comes the technical side. We take 30+ measurements (depending on the type of suit being made). But measurements alone only tell part of the story. Two gentlemen can have identical chest measurements yet require completely different jacket patterns. That’s why we carefully evaluate posture, body balance, and individual proportions.

For our bespoke garments, we also incorporate a preliminary fitting using a muslin or trial garment, allowing us to evaluate and refine the fit before the final suit is completed.

And this is where the difference between a $500 suit and a $5,000 bespoke suit becomes apparent. A $500 suit is generally produced using standardized patterns and efficient manufacturing methods. Furthermore, a $500 suit is 99% of the time glued or fused, meaning that the inner construction is literally GLUED. Over time, this will cause a suit to lose its shape and deteriorate over time (5 trips to the dry cleaner). A bespoke suit, often representing an investment of around $5,000, involves individual bluepenciled patternmaking, finer handmade construction, skilled craftsmanship, and additional fittings. You’re not simply paying for a more expensive fabric. You’re investing in the time, expertise, and workmanship required to create something specifically for your body.

And finally, the best part: seeing everything come together when the client tries on the finished garment. The goal isn’t simply to make a suit that fits your measurements. It’s to create a suit that fits YOU. That’s the difference between taking measurements and understanding tailoring.

High-Twist Wool: One of Our Favorite Fabrics for Florida ☀️

Not all wool wears the same, especially when the temperature starts climbing. The jacket in the picture is made from Dugdale Bros Tropical Breeze, a 100% wool cloth woven using highly twisted yarns. At approximately 290 grams, it offers an excellent combination of breathability, structure, and durability.

But you might be wondering what high-twist wool is, and what makes high-twist different? Well, twisting the wool fibers tightly creates a cloth with a drier, crisper hand and greater natural resilience. Compared with softer, finer wools, high-twist fabrics resist wrinkles exceptionally well and recover quickly after sitting, traveling, or spending a long day in a suit.

So, that makes high-twist wool particularly useful for:

☀️ Hot Weather: The open weave allows air to circulate through the garment, making it an excellent option for Florida.
✈️ Travel: High-twist wool is naturally crease-resistant. As such, your jacket or suit is less likely to look exhausted after a flight or a day in the car.
👔 Frequent Wear: The resilient yarn makes these fabrics particularly practical for professionals who regularly wear tailored clothing.
👌 Beautiful Drape: Although breathable, the cloth still has enough body and weight to hang cleanly rather than feeling flimsy.

Of course, there is a trade-off…

High-twist wool does not have that “buttery soft” hand or subtle sheen you get with really fine luxury wools. Moreover, it feels slightly drier and more textured. However, that is precisely what gives the fabric much of its performance.

So, for a gentleman living in Central Florida, traveling frequently, or simply wanting a suit or sport coat that can handle real-world wear, high-twist wool is one of the most practical fabrics we recommend.

A Classic Three-Piece for the Big Day. 🤵‍♂️🥂

Meet Shawn, wearing his newly finished custom three-piece wedding suit from Carl Axen Clothier.

Shawn chose a timeless navy with a subtle herringbone pattern, giving the fabric just enough texture and depth to elevate the formality without taking away from the classic look.

For the cloth, Shawn selected a sleek and lightweight 100% wool from Vitale Barberis Canonico, one of Italy’s most renowned fabric mills. It was an excellent choice for a wedding suit, especially here in Florida, where keeping the fabric lightweight matters.

This particular client happens to be a bodybuilder, and that presents an interesting challenge when it comes to tailored clothing. Broad shoulders. A developed chest and back. Large arms. A comparatively narrow waist. Try fitting those proportions into a standard off-the-rack tuxedo.

Usually, something has to give. Go large enough to accommodate the shoulders, chest, and arms, and suddenly there is far too much room through the waist and midsection. Size down to achieve a cleaner waist and the jacket can become restrictive across the upper body. That is precisely where custom tailoring becomes so valuable.

As you’ll see in the video, we start with the client, not a predetermined size. We discuss what he wants from the tuxedo and then move into fabrics, linings, and design details. From there, we take his measurements and evaluate the characteristics that measurements alone cannot adequately describe. Shoulder slope. Posture. Stature. Body balance. Shoulder position. Arm position. Proportions. For a physique this developed, those details matter tremendously. Two men can have exactly the same chest measurement and require two completely different jackets. That is why simply wrapping a measuring tape around someone’s body is only part of a proper custom fitting. The goal is not to make a bodybuilder look smaller or squeeze him into an excessively slim tuxedo.

The goal is balance.

We want enough room through the chest, back, and arms to accommodate his physique while creating shape through the waist and maintaining clean proportions throughout the garment. And because this is a tuxedo, getting those proportions right becomes even more important. Formalwear should look clean, elegant, and timeless.

Ben K | Thank you for entrusting us with your custom suit for the BIG day! ✂️🤵‍♂️

Ben came to us for his first custom suit, and this one was particularly important. It was going to be his wedding suit.

He also knew exactly what he wanted. Rather than the slimmer, shorter silhouettes that have dominated menswear in recent years, Ben wanted to go back to classic tailoring. A traditional three-piece suit. Higher-waisted trousers. A fuller-cut jacket and leg. Timeless proportions. Something that felt more old-school than trendy.

There was another reason custom made sense for Ben. He is a big, muscular guy with broad shoulders, developed arms, a larger chest, and a comparatively narrow waist. That kind of athletic drop is notoriously difficult to fit off the rack. If you buy a jacket large enough for the shoulders, chest, and arms, there is often far too much fabric around the waist. Size down for the waist and suddenly the upper body becomes restrictive.

That is where custom tailoring changes the equation.

Instead of asking Ben’s body to conform to a predetermined size, we built the garment around his proportions, posture, preferences, and the silhouette he wanted.

And when the suit arrived? We nailed it.

Ben probably described the result better than we ever could: “My wedding suit turned out better than I could have imagined.”

He also told us that every piece fit beautifully and felt tailored specifically to him. For someone who said dress clothes had always been challenging because of his build, that means a lot.
