What a beauty!

How gorgeous is this 1960s flour sack? This one is worthy of a frame. I love the western style logo on the bright floral fabric— so retro and unique.

I have two available and one will be in my booth at Front Porch this weekend!

Sometimes I hold something in my hand that feels like history coming alive. This 1884 Bible gifted to Maggie Craig from Clearwater, KS by her grandmother, is one such item. 📖

Maggie’s grandmother would have been born before slavery was abolished in this country. Like many grandmothers still today, she was doing her part to teach her grandchildren about her Christian faith. ✝️

At some point in time, Maggie pressed a perfectly preserved Queen butterfly into her Bible (see photo). What a wonder that it has held its color for all this time.

The Bible is held in a little red box, in precisely the right size to have been the gift box it came in, though I cannot know that for certain.

There are so many things in an antique store to discover and wonder about the people who owned them. That’s a large part of the intrigue for me. ❤️

💚✨ A little history lesson with a glow… ✨💚
Have you ever spotted a piece of glass that looks perfectly ordinary in daylight—but absolutely glows under UV light? You’ve probably found uranium glass! 💚
Uranium was added to glass as a coloring agent as early as the 19th century, creating beautiful shades of yellow, green, and amber. Its popularity really took off in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and it was used in everything from tableware and decorative glass to small household pieces.
The secret is uranium oxide, which gives the glass its distinctive color—and causes many pieces to fluoresce that unmistakable bright green under ultraviolet light. ☢️💚
Uranium glass production declined dramatically during and after World War II, when uranium became tightly controlled and manufacturers shifted to other colorants. Some uranium glass has been produced since then, but the older pieces are especially fun for collectors because of their age, colors, patterns and that magical UV reaction.
And yes… we have some glowing pieces at Front Porch Antiques! 😉 Be sure to scroll through all the pictures for examples of surprising colors that glow(although likely from a different coloring agent or from the mold release chemical)! 😳
Stop in, bring your curiosity (and your UV flashlight if you have one!), and see what’s glowing around the shop.
