Instagram auction
Black lives Matter
Hand embroidered mask
Bidding starts August 1 for $150 and ends August 8 at 12:00pm HST.

The highest bidder for the mask will donate the winning bid directly to The Movement For Black Lives
The mask will be delivered upon receipt of donation.
To place your bid comment with (BID and amount), if you prefer to be anonymous then you can dm me your bid.

I started this mask in early June. The idea was easy. Embroider Black Lives Matter onto a mask and auction it to the highest bidder with all the proceeds being donated to a worthy charity.

Because of the complex design, I knew that the topic may not be at the forefront of our minds when I finished, although my hope was that it would be. Here we are 8 weeks after I started and the BLM conversation is fading behind politics and the pandemic.

This was a difficult piece for me to finish. I kept adding more and more and more stitches. In the end I put in 35 hours of stitching. This was not hard work- it was done from the comfort of my home and it is what I love to do, but I procrastinated the ending because I didn’t want to finish. I was nervous- that this isn’t the “right” thing to do. That it won’t help. So I froze and left it unfinished on the side table next to me.

But then I realized that becoming frozen into inaction isn’t going to help either. Let’s not get stuck into inaction. Let’s find ways to support the BLM movement however we are able.

My hope is that my work can benefit those in action in support of Black Lives Matter.

I’ve been working on this sampler for my upcoming embroidery class.
The first class will be at the shop next Wednesday from July 22nd. From 5-7. Claim your seat by following the link in the bio. Sign up by Monday and save- $15 (regularly $60, early birds pay $45). I plan on doing a monthly embroidery class as well as weekly social hour stitch night on Fridays for people who have completed the into class and want to keep stitching. (Drop in rate $20 pay in advance $15). I have been wanting to do this for so long and am so excited that I have created a space where the community can come together and be creative. I have so many class ideas and lots of guest teachers in mind as well. For now you can sign up for intro to embroidery, intro to watercolor and stitching social.

This is my current
This past week I have felt a bit paralyzed. I have been consuming information and questioning everything.
I have lived a life of extreme privilege, I have always been acutely aware of that and I am extremely grateful.
But, I know that I need to DO more. I don’t know what the right thing to do is. I do know that action will bring more action and momentum builds. I know that immersing myself in a big project will give me time to figure out the details.
I started this mask and then worried that it was to bright and cheerful but I want it to be a celebration of black lives so I am continuing with it and trying not to get stuck into inaction by overthinking.
The plan is to sell it or auction it to the highest bidder once it is done. 100 % of the proceeds will go to charity. There are so many people and organizations doing amazing work right now. The length of this project will give me time to research and figure out the best one to support. Black lives matter. Such important work is being done right now I really believe that change can happen. I know that art isn’t going to bring change. That this little gesture isn’t enough but it is something and something is better then nothing.

I know I keep saying this and then doing nothing but I’m thinking this should be my next pattern? I’m a little concerned with grading fit/sizing issues because the body of the dress is only one piece of fabric so their are not a lot of places to adjust. That being said I do think it is a design that would work on many different shapes and sizes. Either way I’m going to be making many more of this dress. I have this same fabric (shimmer nylon/rayon) from in a pale pink and navy blue. I’ll make those to sell as I don’t need 3 shimmer dresses). I also think this dress would be fun to mix some prints with and I want to try it in linen too.

Sometime ideas come in and flow out so easily, I feel disconnected to the process like it’s not my brain making decisions. I am just the machine that is stitching or draping or painting and someone else has already programmed what I’ll make. Other times it is a labor. I fret over every decision. Grasp for inspiration that will not come and when I can’t find it I plug on hoping to make something that isn’t terrible. It ended up being simpler then my prior masks but possibly more elegant. I used a very limited palette for the colors.

A little whimsy, some time to play. I did nothing productive today with the exception of cleaning the studio. It’s ok. Not sure what will become of this but I can imagine elements in a textile. Maybe I’ll design some fabric with these elements.

Since the start of this pandemic I have been gripped with a sense of urgency. As the world slowed down I sped up. All activities got separated into two categories, essential and non-essential and non essential activities. All non-essential activities including creativity were suddenly gone from my life. I steamed through every day, making 1000 masks in less then 3 weeks building a garden, filling out forms, scrolling the news, mindlessly scrolling Instagram without stopping to connect. I burnt out. I realized that I need creativity. I decided to make something ridiculous. To take the symbol of the thing that has caused me so much stress and reclaim it. The black seemed appropriate for the background as we are in doubt in a dark time but it is spring and the flowers continue to bloom around us.

The black cotton sateen was gifted from I am still figuring out what to make from the rest of the yardage. Threads are
It is lined in silk charmuse that I dyed with fern.
