So sad that this will be the last year for Fairport Mardi Gras. Thanks for the memories & to everyone who helped each year to make it happen.
What began in 1939 as a block festival to celebrate the paving of Chesnut Street, has grown and changed over the last 85 years into a family oriented, volunteer run, annual tradition to generations - which gave back hundreds of thousands of dollars to the community, and even more in memories. But since Covid shuttered many businesses, we have been unable to secure consistent mechanical rides of the caliber necessary for a successful Mardi Gras. And despite starting to contact companies in September of last year, the outlook for 2025 is no different (see comments for list of attempts).
Over the last few years our wonderful family of volunteers have stuck it out through Canadian wildfires with toxic air, beach erosion at our fireworks location, Covid, unethical entertainment companies, utilities issues, rides literally washing into the lake and keyboard warriors... as our volunteer numbers have dwindled to just the most dedicated and determined to see Mardi Gras survive. And now these incredible people who have given SO MUCH to this organization have had to make the difficult decision that 2025 will be the final Fairport Mardi Gras.
Please plan to join us for a final one-day Fairport Mardi Gras on Saturday July 5th from 5-11pm as we say goodbye and "Thank you for the memories".
*Our annual parade will kick things off at 5pm. We would like to invite any children to decorate their bikes and lead the parade this year. Please send us a message if you would like to be in the final parade and we will get you to Wendy Sharpe, our parade chair.
*Our final Fairport Mardi Gras Queen judging will take place at the Lighthouse amphitheater following the conclusion of the parade.
*Entertainment and Food vendors TBD will take place from 6-10pm on Lighthouse hill and the Metroparks roundabout as we also celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Lighthouse.
*Fireworks will be our final farewell at dusk
We do plan to hold a 50/50 raffle, with all proceeds going towards our longstanding scholarship program for Fairport High School seniors, that we hope you will support.
More details to come in the next few months, but for now we would like to say thank you for your support over the previous 85 years, we'll see you July 5th, and we hope you've enjoyed Mardi Gras as much as us ❤️.
