I have a love/hate relationship with my sewing room in January. From my quilt club’s fall retreat in late September through the holidays, I am that creative, messy type. Many projects come out of my drawers and off shelves (but only a few get done). Several fabrics are pulled (to find the ONE I need). And don’t even get me started on tools of the trade (don’t worry, I always lock my rotary cutter).

Then comes the New Year, and I become someone else. My husband calls it my Monica switch. I roll up my sleeves and spend hours righting last year’s wrongs. Not quite done yet, but here is a small peek into before and after. The photos show two different corners, but you get the idea. The best part? Finding long lost projects and favorite fabrics I had completely forgotten!

Oldest unfinished project: my Little House on the Prairie quilt from 2009 😮

Most recent fabric purchase: 🤫 today

Members of my quilt club in Castle Rock learned some great paper piecing tricks from award-winning quilter Lisa Fryxell earlier this month. Lisa displayed her beautiful quilts at our November meeting. A holiday wreath workshop was a special bonus!

By the way, Castle Rock Quilt Club meets the first Tuesday of the month at 6pm at New Hope Presbyterian Church off Meadows Pkwy. I’m chair of the the program committee and would love for you to join us in the new year! American Patchwork & Quilting magazine editor Doris Burnette will present “Start Your Sewing Year Off Right.” More details are coming soon to our website: crqc.org

There is nothing quite like getting caught up in a good book at this time of year! I’ve created these quilted sleeves to protect our precious books from damage when traveling through our day. If you know a book lover, but aren't quite sure what book to give them, how about a book sleeve and a gift card? You can't go wrong there! $18 ea or 2 for $30.

Almost November, and it has been so long since I've posted. YES, I've been sewing!! So there's that. However, much of 2022 involved spending time with my dad, who passed away in January. The first six months of 2023 were challenging for me -- dealing with grief, saying goodbye to our family farm, and trying to handle the crazy family life we lead. So, many things fell by the wayside.

Recently I accepted an offer to join an online holiday market. So perhaps that will spur me to post more about my sewing journey. Stay tuned to see what I'm making for market. Until then, here are a couple of recent projects: a paper-pieced zoo quilt for my niece's baby boy, a batik crafter's apron, and one of 24 blocks that will make a bright and beautiful quilt (someday!).
