Studio Notes

Working from photographs and field observations, exploring the shapes of laughing gulls and pelicans.

Sketch. Simplify. Repeat.

Some of these studies may become collage elements, some may become paintings, and some may simply teach me to see a little more clearly.

Every finished piece starts with paying attention.

The Fern Walker
From painted papers to finished collage. I began with a patchwork background of painted and printed papers, then slowly layered fern forms, adjusting placement and scale as the composition developed. The final step was adding the circular elements and small yellow accents that helped connect the piece and create movement across the surface. One layer at a time, the forest emerged. Can you find the fern walker?

Studio notes…

These images show the evolution of an idea inspired by reflections I observed during a meditation walk at Old Fort Bayou Nature Preserve.

Working under a short deadline, I began exploring the shifting reflections of tree trunks in the water. While the piece wasn’t fully resolved in time for the exhibition, the process led me to a new understanding of rhythm, repetition, and movement through painted and cut paper.

Life interrupted studio time, as it often does, but the idea continues to grow. Sometimes a piece isn’t abandoned—it simply asks for more time.

The reflections are still calling me back.

A recent nature pilgrimage with James Inabinet deepened my exploration of how we perceive and interpret the natural world. Through four modes of seeing—Mouse, Hawk, Bear, and Horse—I found myself especially drawn to Bear Seeing, a perspective that values intuition, memory, imagination, and dream alongside direct observation.

As I moved through the landscape, I was drawn to fern patterns, water reflections, crossing reeds, shifting light, and layered textures. These observations are finding their way into a new mixed-media collage for an exhibition opening this month at the Walter Anderson Museum of Art.

My work often begins with collecting shapes, patterns, stories, and fragments from the world around me. This experience reminded me that what we imagine and remember can be just as important as what we see.
