On Sunday evening, the United4Pawling candidates (Cathy Giordano, Joe Furlong, and Andrea Hunt) each received an email from a resident with a list of candidate questions.
We appreciate the effort made by the individuals who prepared and shared questions for local candidates ahead of Election Day. However, the questions were provided on Sunday with a response deadline of Wednesday afternoon—leaving little time for thoughtful and meaningful responses. While we believe the intention behind this effort may be good, these questions should have been shared several weeks ago to allow all candidates an appropriate opportunity to respond. Additionally, the 250-word limit for each response restricts candidates' ability to provide thorough, detailed answers on issues that deserve thoughtful consideration and context.
Throughout the month of October, United4Pawling candidates have made themselves available to residents by being present in the Village on Sundays and by going door-to-door to meet voters directly. Between professional work commitments, a scheduled campaign event, and planned campaign activities this week, we have not had the time necessary to prepare thoughtful written responses.
We fully expect that some of our opponents’ supporters will claim that we are avoiding questions. There is nothing we can do that will prevent that. However, nothing could be further from the truth. We have been visible, accessible, and engaged with the people of Pawling—having real conversations, listening to concerns, and discussing the issues that matter most to our community.
We believe that direct, personal engagement with voters is the most meaningful and transparent way to communicate our positions, and that is where we will continue to focus our time and energy in the final days leading up to Election Day.
It is disappointing that the questions were not distributed earlier, when there was adequate time for all candidates to participate fully.
Sincerely,
United4Pawling Candidates
