The Coast Guard is celebrating its 233rd birthday today! We want to thank all the servicepeople who have committed to keeping our waters and lands safe. We appreciate all that you have done for us.
Five Facts about our Coast Guard:
1.Thanks to the Secretary of Treasurer, Alexander Hamilton, we have our CG. Under his leadership, Congress commissioned the construction of 10 ships to help enforce tariffs and prevent smuggling...the humble beginnings of our current Coast Guard.
2. It is both a federal law enforcement agency and a military branch. Since its inception, the CG has been part of the Department of Treasury (1790), The Department of Transportation (1967), and the Department of Homeland Security (2003).
3. It is approximately the size of the New York Police Department with approximately 41,000 full-time active duty members. It also has approximately 7800 part-time reservists, 8300 civilians, and 31,000 auxiliary CG volunteers.
4. There are two official flags of the Coast Guard. The Standard is for ceremonial use and the Ensign is flown on cutters and at shore units.
5. Coast Guard responsibilities involve: 1.First Response, 2.Law Enforcement, 3.Environment Protection, 4.Transportation Management, 5.Defense Operation, and 6.Security Operations. Imagine doing all that across the world with a workforce of the NYPD?!
