We’re very sad to report the passing of a long time, dear friend. She and her husband, John, traveled to many events over the years. Linda will be missed.

Linda Church Obituary

Linda Mary Church, born the 17th day of October 1944, in Bristol, England, of the union of Michael Magyar and Elsie Gatesford, passed away on May 16th, 2023, with family by her side.
Linda married her High School sweetheart, John Church, on the 21st of June 1963. Linda lived such a full life, pursuing many passions, one being photography. She loved to take pictures and could tell you everything that was happening when the photo was taken. She was a Freelance Photographer for the Reenactment news paper, Smoke and Fire.
Linda enjoyed taking many adventures with her husband and children when they were younger, as well as adventures with John once the boys had grown. Many of their adventures centered around their love for Reenacting. Linda would often talk about the places they went and the things that they were able to do, you could tell that these trips brought her joy. But her furry purry gang at home also brought her joy and she would look forward to getting home to spend time with her kitties.
Linda and John would care for these cats, help rescue them, by taking them in or finding places to rehome them. She had such a love for animals, especially her kitties.
Linda will be greatly missed, by her loving husband of 60 years, John, her two sons, Michael (Ruth) Church and James Church, her grandchildren, Nathaniel (Tara) Church, Charles Church, Ethan (Hailey) Church, Caleb (Heather) Church, Sydney Church and Allison Church, and her great grandchildren, Kayden Churnesky, Aurora Church, Levi Church, Lillyan Church and Jameson Church.
A Celebration of Life Memorial for Linda will be held at a later date.

It is with deep regret that we inform you that James Townsend has passed away over the weekend after complications from a heart attack. Many of you were friends with Jim. He started selling candle lanterns to the historical reenacting community in 1973, which turned into a catalog mail order company that was run out of his garage, and eventually turned into the Jas. Townsend and Son that you know today. For almost fifty years he enjoyed, encouraged, and supported the historical reenacting community. He will be missed.

Regiment of Artillery Button
$4.00 each plus shipping.

War of 1812, 2nd Regiment of Artillery brass uniform buttons.
In January of 1811 the United States formed the 2nd Regiment of Artillery. "When the War of 1812 began, Winfield Scott was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel in the Second Artillery Regiment and transferred to the Niagara region. His first action was at the Battle of Queenston Heights, where he commanded the American landing party. These buttons were issued throughout the war of 1812 to US Units and are sometimes found at post War sites as well.
These 2nd Regiment of Artillery buttons are all individually cut of solid brass blanks. They are then stamped individually from mint quality, hand engraved, hardened steel dies, just as the original buttons were manufactured. They are then finished with hand soldered brass loops on the reverse side. Each loop is aligned properly so as to be attached to the uniform facing in the same direction and with proper alignment. Made proudly here in the United States, these are high quality reproduction pieces. Available as individual buttons or in numbers necessary for regimental uniform construction.

These are made by a local tinsmith. These are not your typical, poorly made decorative imports. The high temperature no lead solder used in these lanterns, prevent heat buildup which can often lead to joint failure in store bought lanterns which in turn can lead to potential fire hazard. $85.00 each.

As many of our customers who have purchased items over the years from Flying Canoe Traders are aware, it has always been our policy to sell our shoes only at events and not to mail order them due to our exclusive fitting process. Proper fitting of your footwear has always been a high priority for us.

We take great pride in providing what we believe are the highest quality of commercially made shoes and services in the living history hobby. For those of you who are unaware of the quality in craftsmanship that goes into every pair of our Boulet line, we encourage you to visit Boulet at bouletboots.com where you can view a video describing what goes into every step of production of these shoes as well as their long history of providing high quality footwear. Remember that all of our sizes are based on men's shoes sizes. Typically we drop two sizes for women's sizes. So a woman's size eight would be approximately a size 6.

The plain shoe buckles that we sell are solid brass, and sized to fit our colonial shoes. They fit straps up to 1 3/8” wide. We’ve sold these buckles for many years, and can vouch for their strength, endurance, and performance. They’re suitable for both military and civilian impressions alike. Buckles are $35 per pair, or $20 per pair when purchased with a pair of our colonial shoes.

To get the best fit, we recommend having someone else install your buckles while your shoes are on your feet. Due to the various differences in everyone’s feet (width, instep, etc.), NEVER accept mail ordered shoes with the buckles pre-installed. Except where they mention the possibility of cutting one of the shoe straps (which we never do because our shoes are double leather and stitched), Townsends has a good video on how to install shoe buckles, linked below. If you have any questions on this process please don’t hesitate to call us, or see us at an event for installation.

Several years ago we began carrying a new line of footwear made by Robert Land from Guelph, Ontario Canada. Robert has been making shoes for more than twenty five years and is highly respected among many in the living history hobby and throughout several different time periods. Judy and I both own several pair of various styles of Robert’s shoes, and we highly recommend them.

We currently have left in stock two styles of Robert's shoes available for sale. We do mail order these shoes, unlike our Boulet brand of which we have become famous for. As always, before purchasing any footwear via mail order, we strongly recommend that you visit a reputable footwear store and have your feet professionally measured. If your feet are properly measured, it should eliminate the possibility of needing to return the shoes due to improper size requests. Don't assume the size of shoes that you currently are wearing on your feet are your true size.

Return policy:
Due to the difficulty involved in getting a good fit by purchasing shoes without trying them on first, it is necessary to inform you regarding our policy for the shipment of shoes. If you mail order a pair of Robert Land shoes from Flying Canoe, we cannot guarantee a proper fit to your foot. This is due to many various factors such as, width of ones foot as well as the height of the instep, arch, girth and numerous other factors that can affect the determination of ones true size. Therefore if shoes are shipped prior to trying them on, the customer will be responsible for return shipping and any subsequent shipping costs to exchange them for a different size. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call.
