Studio Show June 6th at the dyehouse!
This week, preparing for my studio show with made me feel like I am right where I am supposed to be. A decade ago, I was leaving New York to embark on a 5 week long trip for an artist residency. It was my last 'adventure' before coming home to dedicate myself full time to building Green Matters (which as in my mom's backyard at the time).
Building this dyehouse/studio turned out to be the real adventure. I thought that I would 'not have time' to continue to paint, that my life would be completely dedicated to building a commercial scale dyehouse. At first that was true. But as time went on, and the dyehouse grew, there were these small moments of creativity that emerged. One of them was realizing that our dye waste could be turned into pigments, turned into paint. Another was falling in love with accidental stains in the studio, and realizing that not all painting is done with a brush.
In 2019, I dyed fabric to make a dress, only to find myself unable to cut into the beautiful print I had created, and instead stretching it over a canvas. By 2021, I had built a closet to store my paintings. By the end of 2025, I realized that I had created nearly 100 plant based paintings, and virtually no one had seen them.
I never imagined that trying to build a factory would lead me back to where I started, painting because I had something to say with color rather than words.
Join us this Saturday for a celebration of color, plants and friendship.
