Iā€™ve spent 40 years working with fabric. Youā€™d think that would make me want everything perfectly planned before I begin. It did the opposite. šŸ§µ The plan was never the point ā€” the starting was. If youā€™re waiting to feel ā€˜readyā€™ to be creative again... donā€™t. Start with one color.

I really thought there would come a point when Iā€™d have everything figured out.
Apparently, 67 isnā€™t that point. šŸ˜‚
There are still things I want to try, places I want to go, and parts of myself I havenā€™t discovered yet.
Maybe thatā€™s actually the fun of getting older.
Weā€™re not done yet.
Anyone else still wondering what they want to be when they grow up?

My brain has BIG plans.

My body would like to discuss them after a short rest. šŸ˜‚

Apparently reinvention at 67 comes with breaks, coffee, and occasionally forgetting what I was about to reinvent.

But Iā€™m still curious. Still making things. Still wondering what might be next.

Iā€™ll take that.

Anyone else have a brain and body operating on completely different schedules? šŸ˜‚

Apparently, 67 is not the age when someone hands you the instruction manual. šŸ˜‚

I really thought Iā€™d have everything figured out by now.

What I wanted. What Iā€™d be doing. Where life was taking me.

But after more than 40 years as an artist and business owner, Iā€™m still asking myself what I want to be when I grow up.

And you know what?

Iā€™m starting to think thatā€™s a pretty good question to keep asking.

Because who says we have to stop changing, growing, or trying new things just because weā€™ve collected a few more birthdays?

Maybe the interesting part is that weā€™re not finished becoming.

Please tell me Iā€™m not the only one still figuring things out! šŸ˜‚

I wish someone had told me: getting older doesnā€™t mean having it all figured out.

At 67, Iā€™m still wondering what comes next.

Creating has been teaching me that I donā€™t need all the answers. When I draw, I start with one line, then another. I add color, change direction, and let something emerge.

Maybe this next chapter works the same way.

Maybe I donā€™t need a perfect plan. Maybe I just need to begin.

Thatā€™s why Iā€™m creating Art of Becoming, a creative workshop for women exploring what comes next.

ā€™m a woman over 50. But Iā€™m also about 15 different people before lunch. šŸ˜‚

Artist. Designer. Photographer. Accountant. Social media manager. Customer service department. Shipping coordinator. And occasionally, the woman who just wants to sit down with a cup of coffee and CREATE something.

After more than 40 years of running my own creative business, Iā€™ve worn more hats than I can count.

And somewhere between doing all the things and being all the things, itā€™s easy to forget the person underneath them.

Thatā€™s something Iā€™ve been thinking about a lot lately.

At this stage of life, I donā€™t want to just keep doing what Iā€™ve always done. I want to make room for who Iā€™m becoming.

But first, I might need to fire a few of my imaginary employees. šŸ˜‚

I really thought there would come an age when Iā€™d have everything figured out.

Iā€™d know what I wanted.

Iā€™d feel certain about my direction.

Iā€™d have a plan.

But here I am at 67, still asking myself some pretty big questions.

And lately, Iā€™ve been wondering if thatā€™s actually a good thing.

Maybe weā€™re not supposed to stop growing just because weā€™ve reached a certain age.

Maybe weā€™re allowed to change our minds.

Want different things.

Try something new.

Or simply admit that what worked for the last 30 years might not be what we want for the next 30.

Iā€™ve spent more than 40 years creating with color, fabric, and art.

And one thing Iā€™ve learned is that you donā€™t always have to know what youā€™re making before you begin.

Sometimes you discover it along the way.

Iā€™m beginning to think life works that way, too.

Does anyone else feel like theyā€™re still figuring out what they want to be when they grow up? šŸ˜„

Apparently I spent a lot of years believing creativity had some very official prerequisites.

A good idea.

A plan.

The correct materials.

And preferably enough confidence that I wouldnā€™t make a complete mess.

Iā€™m beginning to suspect that was all wildly overrated. šŸ˜‚

Sometimes the hardest part is simply beginning before you know exactly what youā€™re making.

And lately Iā€™m realizing I donā€™t necessarily need something new to begin with either.

I can start with something I already have.

An old piece of fabric.

Something unfinished.

A color I still love.

A piece from an earlier chapter.

Then I can move something around.

Add something.

Change my mind.

Notice what interests me.

And keep going.

It doesnā€™t have to become a masterpiece.

It just has to give me something to respond to.

Itā€™s almost the opposite.

Some of the things I love most happen because something doesnā€™t go according to plan.

A color lands differently.

An edge refuses to behave.

Two things I wouldnā€™t normally put together suddenly look interesting.

And sometimes the thing I hadnā€™t planned becomes my favorite part.

Maybe creativity doesnā€™t always need more control.

Maybe sometimes it needs a little room.

I saved these fabric panels for years.

They came from the Steel Pony wholesale days, when we created panels using the hand-painted designs that appeared on our clothing.

That chapter of my life changed.

But I never stopped loving these pieces.

Eventually, I took a class about making a quilt that tells a story and pulled them out again.

I added other fabrics, stitching and details.

Something from an earlier chapter became something completely different.

And lately Iā€™ve been thinking about how much that resembles life.

We hear so much about starting over.

Reinventing ourselves.

Finding ourselves.

Becoming someone new.

But at 67, Iā€™m not sure I want to throw everything out and become someone new.

There are parts of who Iā€™ve been that I still very much want to keep.

Maybe creating whatā€™s next isnā€™t always about starting over.

Maybe itā€™s about choosing what you want to carry forward and making something new from there.
