In her instant classic film “Barbie,” Greta Gerwig beautifully stated how, “It is literally impossible to be a woman.”
While all of us here at Je Suis Jolie felt the truth of many parts—if not all—of that oft-quoted “Barbie” monologue, we want to take a moment on International Women’s Day to speak to the world in which we hope to live instead. A world that rises up to become worthy of the millions of strong, beautiful, talented, devoted, intelligent, hilarious, impossible, flawed, fantastic, perfect women who inhabit it.
We don’t have control over the entire world. Some days, we barely have control over ourselves. But here, inside the walls of our store, we hope to create a little slice of the world we’d like to see. Here, we hope that in our fitting rooms, instead of looking at your reflection and seeing all the things you’d like to change, you see all of the beauty in your uniqueness. All of the strength in your limbs. All of the power in your mind. All of the tenacity in your spirit.
Happy International Women’s Day to all women out there. Let’s continue to reshape the world into the one we’d like to see, filled with compassion, kindness, and love. So that one day, future generations will watch “Barbie” and America Ferrera’s monologue won’t resonate with them even a little bit.
