Today is Indigenous Peoples Day. F*ck Columbus. Let’s not forget we are on stolen land. Let us acknowledge that settler-colonialism is still happening not only in places like Palestine, but also here in our backyard.
Indigenous people on this land (Turtle Island) have for decades struggled and resisted against the violent removal from their native home. They continue to face injustice. There’s no doubt that the Indigenous struggle is key to understanding systemic racism in this country. There’s a reason why during the Black Lives Matter uprisings the last few months, we’ve been seeing folks tearing down statues of Columbus. Columbus statues represent state violence endured by Black and Indigenous folks for over 500 years. Columbus and other genocidal colonizers should never be celebrated and commemorated. It’s unacceptable. The people have come together to topple statues and racist mascots because we want a better future. We deserve better.
As a Palestinian who comes from a family of refugees that were violently ripped away from our indigenous land in Palestine in the name of settler-colonialsm and still can’t return, my heart is with our Indigenous siblings in Turtle Island struggling for their rights. Thank you for your inspiring beauty and resilience in the face of injustice. Today and everyday, we honor you. 💛
Indigenous communities are some of the most vulnerable right now and have been hit hard by COVID-19. Please check out 's rapid response campaign and donate if you're able. Link is in my bio.
(I was born and raised in Chicago. Chicago is built on the ancestral homeland of the Council of the Three Fires: the Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi Nations. Many other tribes such as the Miami, Ho-Chunk, Menominee, Sac, and Fox also called this area home.)
