GRANDMA'S FAVORITE DISHCLOTH - LOOM KNITTER'S VERSION
FREE PATTERN
General Note:
This dishcloth has been around for years. It goes by many different names: Grandmother’s Favorite Dishcloth, Sugar & Cream Dishcloth, Corner to Corner Dishcloth, and others. This pattern also shows up in a larger version to make a blanket. The oldest version I found in a web archive has the words, “Designer: Unknown”. As such, I never found one person whose permission I needed to translate this pattern for loom knitters. My apologies to the original creator!
Loom: 3/8” gauge loom with a minimum of 54 pegs
Yarn: worsted weight [4] yarn
Finished Size: 8” x 8”
Definitions:
p = purl
u = u-knit stitch
yo = “yarn over”. This increases one stitch in the row. Place the working yarn in front of the indicated peg (think of it as laying the “yarn over” the peg). That’s it! Do not work any stitch on this peg at this point. Continue on per the instructions with the next peg. In the “Increases Section” of this pattern, the “yarn over” occurs in the middle of a row and adds one stitch to the row. As such, every stitch that is worked prior to the yarn over must be moved out to the next adjacent, empty peg. For example, if the row says “u2, yo, u to the end”, you would u-knit peg 1 and move over to next adjacent, empty peg. Then u-knit peg 2 and move it to the empty peg beside it. This gives you an empty peg 3 and allows you to “yarn over” peg 3. Then u-knit the remaining stitches.
u2tog = “u-knit 2 together”. This decreases one stitch in the row. In this pattern, the loops on two pegs will be knit together as one to decrease the number of stitches. For example, if you are to u2tog on pegs 2 and 3, move the loop from peg 2 to peg 3. U-knit the two loops on peg 3 as though they were one. Then move the loop from peg 1 in to the now-empty peg 2 and close up the gap.
p2tog = “purl 2 together”. This decreases one stitch in the row. In this pattern, the loops on two pegs will be knit together as one to decrease the number of stitches. For example, if you are to p2tog on pegs 2 and 3, move the loop from peg 2 to peg 3. Purl the two loops on peg 3 as though they were one. Then move the loop from peg 1 in to the now-empty peg 2 and close up the gap.
yo/u2tog = “yarn over, u-knit 2 together”.
This creates an eyelet over 2 pegs.
To do a yo/u2tog, you’ll have loops already on pegs 1 and 2.
Move the loop from peg 1 to peg 2.
Your loom should now have two loops on peg 2 and an empty peg 1.
Place the working yarn in front of the empty peg 1 (this is the “yarn over”); then
u-knit off the two loops that are on peg 2 as though they were one.
yo/p2tog = “yarn over, purl 2 together”.

bbo = Basic Bind Off
Step 1: E-wrap and knit peg 1.
Step 2: E-wrap and knit peg 2.
Step 3: Move the loop from peg 2 on top of the loop on peg 1. Knit over.
Step 4: Move the new loop from peg 1 to peg 2. (if you are binding off 1 stitch, end here)
Step 5: E-wrap and knit peg 3.
Step 6: Move the loop from peg 3 on top of the loop on peg 2. Knit over. (if you are binding off 2 stitches,
end here)
Step 7: E-wrap and knit peg 4.
Step 8: Move the loop from peg 4 on top of the loop on peg 3. Knit over. (if you are binding off 3 stitches,
end here)
Continue this process until you have bound off the required number of stitches. If you are casting off,
continue this process until you have just one loop left on the loom.
Step 9: Cut the yarn leaving a 3” tail. E-wrap the final peg, knit over and pull the tail end through.
