We got engaged today!!! 💍💛

Went fossil hunting in Rabbit Valley in Colorado, and he snuck off and put the ring in this gorgeous vintage glass box and then called me over to 'find' it. So dang cute. Then I surprised him with his own engagement ring bc why should only I get to wear one?!

I'm so excited for a life together with this guy. you let me be my best self and thats all I've ever wanted.

Working with to create garments that utilized bundle dyed prints, we had to figure out a way to scale, as well as a way to duplicate prints - an impossible task if each garment was hand-dyed.
I ended up making several large swatches, which their team then digitized and made into repeating patterns in multiple color stories.
These are two of the prints used on beautiful plissé silk to create a dress and separates. A few pieces are available for pre-order on Altuzarra's website. (If anyone wants to buy me one, feel free 😂).

Yesterday's shoot was a really incredible experience - especially for being the first real Waxflower Dye Works shoot! It was so cool to see my pieces being modeled by the amazing and - so gorgeous 😍
I came away with a whole new sense of excitement and drive, and some new ideas that I am really looking forward to working on.
Huge thanks to for hustling and making it work under less than ideal circumstances, from staging to photos and everything in between. And to for some killer makeup. And for the space. And for the flowers.

🦄 Every naturally bundle dyed, organic cotton bandana is unique - no two are the same, even if they are made using the same dyestuff! 🦄
The dye plants/insects we use are selected because of their remarkable color AND their ability to stay fast through repeated wear + washing.
Some colors fade more easily than other, such as the small spots of dark teal you can see in lower 2 bandanas. This is because the plants they come from- in this case, Black Knight Scabiosa - give colors that are Anthocyanin based. Anthocyanins are phytopigments in the Flavanoid group, and are responsible for the majority of Purples, Blues, Pinks, and Reds in plant matter (flowers, berries, fruits + veggies, etc). While they are great for use as food colorants, and produce lovely colors on fabric, they are not stable and will fade rapidly. This is why we use anthocyanin-based colors very sparingly as accents among more colorfast/stable dyes like Madder Root, Weld, and other well studied and tested dyestuffs.

🥑 Avocados were my introduction into natural dyeing. I was inspired by the beautiful work of and spent last spring and summer collecting pits and skins from down the street. That led to new friendships, and some really exciting new opportunities later on.
I haven't done much with avocado dyes in the last 8 months or so - but I am really excited to be working on more garments for !!!
Avocados have become a popular starting point for aspiring natural dyers, and it's not hard to see why; The soft pastel pinks and salmon shades that can be achieved are undeniably beautiful! Because avocados are high in tannins, the pinks will, over the years, shift to become more beige/tan/light brown as the more fugitive compounds degrade. But the pink can hold on for a while especially when applied to protein fibers like silk, or to well mordanted cotton/cellulosic fibers.
I like to add a bit of Madder Root, Cochineal, and/or Quebracho to my avocado bath to add more colorfast pink tones!!

I'll be out of town for a few days enjoying the peace of nature in the Adirondacks. When I get back, new website work will be commencing and so will some other fun projects!!
