Sam’s Vintage

Sam’s Vintage Pittsburgh’s fun vintage clothing shop. Located at 3701 Butler St. We specialize in the 1920s-1960s, with a particular emphasis on formal pieces and gowns.

Owner, Sam Barna, began collecting vintage clothing at just 12 years old. 10 years later Pink Tulle Vintage was born. We are firm believers in pink, glitter, and the saying, "they don't make 'em like they used to."

WE MADE IT INTO THE VOTING ROUND FOR THE CITY PAPER’S BEST OF PGH 2023!!!!

I would be thrilled and beyond grateful if you all would take a few minutes and vote for us at the link in my bio. I’m so thankful to everyone who has helped us to advance this far to a spot amongst such great company. You can vote once per day and voting is only open until July 30th!! *LINK TO VOTE IS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE POST & IN THE COMMENTS*

I was going to write a long(er) post explaining some of the context around the shop and why it means so much to me, but I’ll give you all the Reader’s Digest version. The past few years have been pretty tough for me on numerous levels - there’s been grief, loss, changes of long held plans, and a lot of feeling aimless. Last September, I spent my 29th birthday crying (by myself) because I felt like I hadn’t accomplished ANY of the things that I’d planned to do by 30. I realize that this sounds a little ridiculous, but I’m a very goal-oriented person. I’d envisioned the end of my 20s as a blank checklist with grad school, marriage, and home ownership looming as the most significant unchecked boxes. I understand that a lot of this manifested from unrealistic societal pressure, but I felt like a failure. I made myself a promise that night as I sobbed into a glass of champagne - I would do ANYTHING to make sure that I wouldn’t cry on my 30th birthday.

In the months that intervened I realized that one area I could work on was my business and I was ready to expand; I had hoped that I could at least find a space for the shop by the end of 2023, but I was incredibly lucky that it happened much faster. Having the opportunity to have this space, to meet so many wonderful people, and to do what I love has literally been a dream come true. It would mean the world to me to win, but just getting to embark on this unexpected journey is more than enough. We’re still a few months out from my birthday, but I don’t for see myself weeping. 🤞🏻😅 I can’t thank everyone who’s been a part of this enough - you’ve all impacted my life more than you’ll ever know. Xoxo, Sam 💗

P.S. You should do whatever exciting and scary thing it is that you can’t stop thinking about, the sooner the better

All of this fresh denim (mirror is 7 foot tall for reference) is hitting the shop, our booth at , and our space in for the Lawrenceville Vintage Crawl this Sunday (6/11)! This is just a tiny sample of all the new arrivals I’ll be putting out just for this event - be sure to stop at all three spots for the best selection. Also be sure to check out all the other amazing shops included on the Crawl and all the glorious vendors at Made & Found. 💖 I can’t make it to the this weekend, three places at once is my limit unfortunately, but I’d definitely recommend visiting our friends there as well. See you all on Sunday! 💖

The corgi’s out of the bag - we’re changing our name! Going forward, we’ll officially be “Sam’s Vintage LLC.” ✨

While a lot of you know that Sam is my name, I’m actually named after my grandpa - so the name is mostly after him (and maybe a little after me). My Pappy Sam taught me everything about thrifting, sustainability through creative reuse (he built his house out of an upcycled train station that he bought for $1 and tore down himself - in the 70s!), and just generally being a good person. He was the ultimate supporter of my business, he’d regularly call me from a random thrift store or estate sale to see if I wanted dresses he’d found. He supported every crazy idea I ever had, taught me all the
good thrift stores, and made me feel like I could do anything I set my mind to.

We lost him to cancer in January 2020. When I sat down to write his obituary, I flipped open his wallet that was sitting next to me. It was mostly empty at that point, pared down to just the essentials, but inside I found this crumpled little piece of paper - it was a list of "good vintage brands to look for," that he had asked me to make him about two years prior. He wanted to help me with my business and he carried that scrap of paper until his last day. I hope he’s proud of me and the shop. I’m a firm believer that love, just like good vintage, should be treasured and passed down through generations. 💗
