Self-forgiveness is not a feeling a child can be talked into.

You can tell a four-year-old it was an accident. You can tell them everybody makes mistakes. You can tell them they are still good. They will hear all of it and believe none of it, because reassurance arrives from outside and the verdict they have already passed on themselves came from inside.

What changes it is action. A child forgives themselves when they do the repairing thing and discover they are still welcome afterward.

This is why Petal never talks her way out of what she did. She starts building again, and that is the whole argument of the book.

Swipe for four things to say to a child who cannot let a mistake go.

There is one object in this book that nobody ever explains.

A paper flag goes up on the first house, bright and proud. When the house comes down, Pip picks the flag up off the floor and holds it the way you hold something wounded. At the end, a fresh one goes up on the second house.

No character mentions it. Children do not need it mentioned.

That is how a picture book teaches something without instructing anybody.

The Second House is here.

Petal and Pip are twins. They build a house out of cardboard, the two of them, and they put a paper flag at the top of it.

Then it comes down, and Petal is the reason.

This is a book about what a child does after they are the one who broke it. Not the apology, which children learn early and perform well. The part after that, when a small person has to decide whether they are still someone who gets to build.

The Second House is the thirteenth and final book in the Pitch A Fete series. It is available now at pitchafete.com.

Behind the Story, episode three .What do you actually do on a normal Thursday?

You practice the little things before they ever become big things. The small moments, the ordinary losses, the words you say when nothing is happening.

Because resilience isn’t built in one big moment. It’s built in a hundred Thursdays nobody filmed. 🧸Comment BENNETT for his book free.

Your job was never to fix the feeling. It was to hand them the pen.

A child who learns to carry a loss is a child learning they are the author of what happens next not the scoreboard, not the other team, them.

That is the thread under every Pitch A Fête book. Bennett is where it starts.
