Red Leaf (Wazhazha Brule)Red Leaf was born about 1815, and he crops up in one of the Rosebud Agency censuses, maybe 1886 or '87 (with a 30 year-old wife!), but I can't find him after that. Perhaps Ephriam can help with his census data.
He was a presumably younger brother of Scattering Bear (Mato Wayuhi - I've had wayuhi explained as like a bear digging in the earth and scattering roots). They belonged to one of the leading families within the Wazhazha band, a large tiwahe with very extensive connections. As early as 1844-45 trader David Adams considered Scattering Bear as the leader of one constituent sub-band of the Wazhazhas. SB dealt directly with Adams and rival traders as the 'chief' of this group. In January 1846 a group of Brule chiefs - they seem largely to be Wazhazhas - signed a petition to be presented to the President, requesting recompense for the loss of resources to the emigrant traffic along the North Platte River.

Redbone was a Native American rock band. They reached the Top 5 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1974 with their single, "Come and Get Your Love". The single went certified Gold selling over a million copies. It also made Redbone the first Native American band to reach the top five on the Billboard Hot 100, with the song reaching number 5.[1] Redbone achieved hits with their singles "We Were All Wounded at Wounded Knee", "The Witch Queen of New Orleans", "Wovoka", and "Maggie" in the United States, although these singles were more successful overseas

The Mount Rushmore occupation by the American Indian Movement (June 6, 1971). Attempted to bring attention to the United States violations of the Treaty of Fort Laramie (1868), approximately 40 protesters made it to the top of the monument armed with baseball bats. While there, they erected a ceremonial altar behind Rooseveltโ€™s head. The superintendent of the memorial sent 50 rangers and deputies to try to end the occupation.
After a 12-hour protest, nine men and 11 women were arrested. Once they were handcuffed, the journey back down was difficult. AIM leader Russell Means shared the details in his book Where White Men Fear to Tread.
โ€œThey shoved billy clubs between our cuffed arms, and a policeman took each end of it and dragged us, face-up, down the mountain,โ€ he wrote. โ€œThe trouble was that there wasnโ€™t a path. The way downโ€”normally about a ten-minute jauntโ€”includes huge boulders that must be climbed or jumped. We said nothing, and we did nothing to help our captors as they dragged us over rocks and twigs, anything they could find to rip us up.โ€
The protesters demanded jury trials and argued they were not trespassing because of the 1868 treaty, which affirmed the Black Hills as sacred land. The federal judge, a landowner in the Black Hills, recused himself, and the charges eventually were dismissed.

Photo of a late-19th-century Canadian Blackfoot brave - one of the prime examples of a northern Plains Indian ready for the hunt or for battle. All studded out with his brass-tacked 1873 Wi******er carbine and belt full of cartridges, heโ€™s also equipped with a heavily tacked knife scabbard, riding quirt, a necklace and bracelet, and a unique breastplate, made up of northwest trade gun brass serpentine sideplates. Even his ponyโ€™s U.S. Cavalry headstall has had brass tacks added for a more personal look.
