Port Aransas beaches will be closed to vehicular traffic from 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, to 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, due to the likelihood of coastal flooding from Hurricane Delta, according to a mayoral proclamation.
Port Aransas Mayor Charles Bujan issued the proclamation today, Tuesday, Oct. 6.
A powerful hurricane, Delta is forecast to move from the Yucatan Peninsula across the Gulf of Mexico this week, according to a bulletin issued by the National Weather Service office in Corpus Christi.
A map attached to the bulletin shows landfall likely in Louisiana, but a precise location hasn’t been determined.
Even if landfall happens hundreds of miles away, the hurricane is expected to send big Gulf swells toward the Coastal Bend. Waves could reach the dunes and cut off beach access roads.
Forecasters said dangerous rip currents are likely.
