History is best preserved when it is officially documented. Quilts have been in families for ions of years. Their stories are usually passed down with each quilt. As the years go by, the value of the quilt is increased as the documentation (photographs, stories, ownership, etc.) increases for each quilt. Through the maintenance and retaining of historical documentation, the significance of the family heirloom ensures that the quilt will not be casually discarded as worthless in the future.
