If you didn't know - NEVER put a wool sweater in the dryer! This unfortunate accident has caused many household arguments when a family member finds their favorite sweater has shrunk three sizes...
Clothing items made out of natural fibers like wool, alpaca, and cashmere have a tendency to shrink in the dryer because of the microscopic structure of the fibers themselves. They contain hooks, which act like barbs to other fiber strands, and when exposed to heat, moisture, and/or friction, cause interlocking between the fibers themselves. The more interlocked the fibers become, the harder it is to pull them apart from each other, resulting in a felted fabric.
