Silvania

Silvania Clothing, accessories, and home goods featuring original screenprint designs inspired by ancient Peruvian art. She passed away in 2007.

Silvania is the revival of a fabric business created in 1956 in Lima, Peru by Georgia Kirkpatrick’s grandmother, Silvia. Silvia took inspiration form precolonial Peruvian motifs and turned them into her own colorful prints on cotton products. Silvia created Silvania Prints after a two-year expedition with her husband, Victor von Hagen, for his book Highway of the Sun. Victor met her as an art stud

ent in New York and described her in his book as having "a way of puncturing sophisms with thrusts of disarming frankness". With family roots in Germany and Peru, Silvia identified herself as a citizen of the world after growing up in Bremen and Sao Paolo, attending college in New York, and raising her family in Lima and San Francisco. Silvia raised three children while starting her business. She was ahead of her time as a modern working mother in a country dominated by male-led businesses. Georgia's clothing and accessory designs are inspired by strong, working women like Silvia. Silvia came to open several stores in Lima and Cusco, Peru selling fabric, clothing, and home goods. Silvania Prints was a popular brand in Peru until Silvia closed it in 2004. Georgia revived Silvania in 2012, a few years after graduating from Reed College in her hometown of Portland, Oregon (Georgia has spent a few years living in Peru and continues to visit frequently).

A cozy spot at the top of the Amazon Rainforest. I recently took over my auntie’s page and am sharing photos of her luxurious bed and breakfast in the remote northern Andes. Follow Kentitambo to see more of the gorgeous Chachapoyas region of Peru - part of Peru you don’t often see photos of!

When I got home from vacation, I got straight back to designing purses. I never knew I’d want to stray from designing with cotton, but here I am having a ball working with cork fabric.

I can’t wait to show you all the new designs...they are increasing in size and sophistication.

Perhaps my favorite stop in Norway was Balestrand, where we came across the workshop of Gjøa Ese, an expert weaver and knitter, and her friend Gwyneth. We were tempted in by the colorful yarn hanging in the window in their early-20th-century building. They showed me their naturally dyed yarns and described how they would dry plants in the summer and spring and dye their wool yarn during the winter. The blankets they wove were recreations of traditional Norwegian designs, including Gjøa’s own heirloom from her grandmother. I’m returning one day with room in my luggage for one of those blankets. Check out my Instagram stories for more pictures of the beautiful town of Balestrand!

Checking out the real estate market here in Norway.

Jk. But I do love these traditional green roofs. They are called “torvtak” in Norwegian and have been incorporated in the architecture here since the time of the Vikings.
