Arrival Mag Launch Part Feb 28, 2025
I have never done anything like this before. I’ve never released a magazine or any finished completed project out to the world before and I have never hosted any sort of event before either.
But what started out as a passion project, just a way for me to memorialize my memories I wanted to try something different, what if I put myself out there? After moving to Portland almost 6 months ago discovering a small business completely dedicated to magazines ChessClub the vision started to form.
I was scared though. What if no one was interested in the magazine, what if no one showed up to the launch party? I mean I am an unknown in this community why would people care? I decided to push past the fear that always has held me back and do it anyways.
On my birthday I launched the magazine online. I sold out of all the magazines online within 2 days. On my eventbrite I had 42 RSVPs and 30 showed up most of those people strangers. For my panelists I met all of them the week before the event. All of them responding to my requests for black women travelers and all of them willing to help out a stranger.
The last day of black history month, the day of my magazine launch party was a magical moment everything and everyone coming together. It filled my heart with joy to see the beginnings of a little community. I am so grateful.
