Potomac Fiber Arts Guild The Potomac Fiber Arts Guild (300+members) promotes fiber arts in the Washington, DC metro area. The Guild hosts workshops by well-known fiber artists.

The Potomac Fiber Arts Guild is an association of fiber artists located in the greater Washington, DC, metropolitan area. It is a 501(c)(3) corporation that promotes and conducts educational programs in a wide range of fiber art, such as weaving, spinning, knitting, quilting, felting, dyeing, and surface design, for members and as outreach activities. The Guild offers a grant of up to $1,000 in al

ternate years for a member to enrich her/his technical or aesthetic development in the fiber arts. Members enjoy participating in study groups, attending monthly guild meetings and programs, renting equipment, and borrowing from the Guild's extensive library. The Potomac Fiber Arts Guild is a member of the Mid-Atlantic Fiber Association, Artisans United, Inc., the Handweavers Guild of America, and the Creative Crafts Council, which affords its members many opportunities to participate and to exhibit their work. Registration preference is given to Guild members, and opens to non-members two to four weeks before a workshop. The Guild also maintains a list of its members who are national and regional instructors in fiber art techniques. The Guild welcomes new members interested in exploring fiber arts of all kinds. Members are not required to have any particular level of expertise – only a desire to Guild members display and sell handmade items such as wall art, quilts, jewelry, hats, bags, scarves, and accessories in the Potomac Fiber Arts Gallery, located in the Torpedo Factory in Old Town Alexandria, VA. learn and share.

Saturday’s guild meeting promises to be filled with a lot of fun and some amazing presentations – and a Stay and Stitch! We have lots of announcements to share and we’ll hear from our Engagement team about the Handwork 2026 initiative/exhibit followed by a presentation from the Dye Study Group.
And then our headliners, Kyrie Garretson and Marina Welch, will share their presentation about “Weaving with Maximo Laura in Peru”. These images are Kyrie's and Marina’s weavings and we are in for a real treat with this presentation!
Kyrie and Marina will share their experiences with both the Level 1 and Level 2 Maximo Laura workshops in Peru. The Level 1 workshop takes place in Yucay, 8,000 feet high in the Sacred Valley and the Level 2 workshop in the vibrant Miraflores district of Lima.
Kyrie Garretson has a BFA in painting from Maryland Institute. For many years, her primary textile involvement was in knitting and spinning, but in 2016, she lucked into a Baby Wolf loom and started weaving. Weaving left all the other disciplines far behind! She joined PFAG several years ago. Kyrie shows regularly and won the Complex Weavers award at MAFA in 2023. She has studied with many excellent weavers, most recently taking a Second Level Tapestry Workshop with Maximo Laura in Peru.
Marina Welch is a member of Pinellas Weavers Guild. She became interested in tapestry weaving just before COVID closed down the world so she learned through online courses. Her interest was mostly in small format pieces, which suited both her lifestyle and her available space. In 2023 two opportunities for in person tapestry classes presented themselves. First was a workshop by Elizabeth Buckley titled Hachures in Contemporary Tapestry and then, later in the year, a tapestry weaving workshop with Maximo Laura in Yucay, Peru. In March of this year, she was able to return to Peru for a Level 2 tapestry workshop with Maximo and his team. Marina has also done a bit of weaving on a rigid heddle loom and on an inkle loom.

Potomac Fiber Arts Guild member, Cindy Gossage, offers two opportunities to travel virtually and experiment with an Afro-Indian style of hand stitching called kawandi. Kawandi quilting is a beautiful example of upcycling materials on hand to produce joyous home furnishings. Developed by an ethnic group known as the Siddhi, it involves layering worn saris and scraps from other clothing with a simple running stitch to create a new lovely, drapey fabric to create bedspreads, pillows, and mattress covers.
Kawandi is an excellent introduction to hand quilting for beginners. At the same time, it is an interesting challenge to experienced quilters due to its improvisational composition and its “outside-in” stitching. Last, and maybe most importantly for us today, it is a lovely, low-pressure opportunity to play with fabric and sink into the meditative practice of hand stitch in community.
Cindy has 2 remaining sessions: Sunday, May 3 and Saturday, May 30. Both will run from 1 – 4 pm, at the Guild studio at Artists and Makers in Rockville, MD.
The cost for each session is $60. Cindy will provide all materials and tools needed: backing fabrics, scraps for creating the tops, thread, needles, pins, and scissors. All you have to do is show up!
The sessions are not sequential in terms of content, so you can join either or both. In these “taster” sessions, we obviously won’t be able to make a bed-sized item, but a place mat, a pillow top, or a set of coasters is definitely within reach.

Full disclosure, I had a wonderful time chatting with several fiber arts who have studios and are also members of the guild.

Tomorrow’s guild meeting is going to be a great one! We have quite a few guild updates to share and you won’t want to miss the Group G Weavers study group presentation!

We know you’ll really enjoy our feature presentation - Harvesting Local Hues: Unveiling the Chesapeake Fibershed’s Journey in Revitalizing Our Textile Heritage.

In an effort to explore the rich palette of our region, Lisa Check and Kerstin Zurbrigg launched a local dye project focused on discovering which dye plants can be foraged or cultivated in the Chesapeake area. Each month, they selected a different plant to study, approaching the work with a scientific mindset—testing variables and producing 15–20 dye samples per plant. These beautifully documented results were compiled into a local dyebook that highlights the colors, processes, and potential of regional dyes. In this presentation, Lisa and Kerstin will share their journey, the plants they’ve explored so far, and the vibrant, hand-crafted books that showcase their findings.
