Sneak peek of an upcoming production I worked on in November. Pretty cool I made a dress for Jennifer Lawrence. Loved her in Winter's Bone but most of you might know her from Hunger Games.

Isn't this extant gown just gorgeous? Look how clever the maker was with the waistband!

This VERY POPULAR Romantic Era silhouette is the inspiration behind our BROOKS DRESS. It is by far a favorite to both make and wear!

We will be out of the studio next week and will return April 6th. Happy Spring my friends!

Did you know beloved author Beatrix Potter was also an accomplished mycologist?

Best known for her turn of the century illustrated stories featuring personified animals, she was also an avid naturalist who used her book royalties to preserve and protect over 4,000 acres and 15 working farms in the Lake District.

Today as we face rapid development with the loss of farmland across the United States, Beatrix Potter and her approach to living is more relevant than ever. She was a protector and promotor of loving the land and animals with whom we share space.

Nanyehi "Nancy Ward" is a well known name here in East Tennessee- but she has a complicated history.

Considered one of the Cherokee's Beloved Women, she was cousin to Warrior Chief Dragging Canoe and was opposed to his aggressive Watauga raids. A young Rachel Donelson (future wife of Andrew Jackson) is known to be one of the settlers attacked by the Wataugans.

While Nanyehi attempted to promote peace with the European settlers, her attempts to resolve conflicts through assimilation are controversial amongst the modern Cherokee people.

In the late 1750s, Nenyehi married a European trader named Bryant Ward and adopted the English name Nancy Ward. When Bryan returned to his English wife in South Carolina, Nanyehi and their daughter accompanied him. It is recorded the wives were friendly with one another.

Sadly, the efforts towards peace with the Europeans would not come to fruition. In the years after the American Revolution, Cherokee lands were sold off piece by piece. Nanyehi became an innkeeper for European settlers traveling Westward into what was once her beloved Cherokee lands.

Nanyehi died in the 1820s- before the forced removal of her people. On the day she died, it is said witnesses saw a white light rise from her body, taking the form of a wolf and then a swan. It fluttered about and then flew off in the direction of her town, Chota.

Nanyehi was the last woman to receive the Cherokee title Beloved Woman until the late 20th century.

On March 12, 1912, Juliette Gordon Low started a girls club that has come to be known as The Girl Scouts of America!

unbeknownst to Low, her girls club would provide vital support on the homefront during WWI. Showing up to help clean, cook, and entertain younger children for families whose men were overseas were just one way the girls helped serve their communities. Others managed victory gardens (a term most affiliated with the Second World War but has origins in WWI).

You can find a copy of the original Girl Scout Guidebook in our new Education & Resources shop tab! Happy Birthday Girl Scouts!

During times of crisis, folks at home have always tried to maintain a sense of normalcy. When the United States entered WWI, many men enlisted to serve overseas.

Households were left without fathers, sons, and brothers. Yet, women here in Tennessee were not content to just sit idly by.

In celebration of Women's history month, we honor Virginia P Moore (Peabody University)- one of Tennessee's first female agricultural extension agents. Known for her canning and food preservation courses (often led in the fields around the state), during wartime, her "clubs" became social events for those left behind and taught modern skills that encouraged self sufficiency.
