Heart Month (February) is approaching, and for my family, it is also Congenital Heart Disease Awareness Month. Our son was diagnosed just before his 2nd birthday in 2024 and underwent open-heart surgery just after his birthday.
Congenital heart disease reminds us that the heart can be physically fragile, sometimes formed with challenges from birth. Yet Psalm 28:7 points us to a powerful truth: while the physical heart may struggle, our hope and strength come from the Lord, who sustains what medicine alone cannot.
For individuals and families living with CHD:
“The Lord is my strength” speaks to the daily endurance required through surgeries, hospital stays, uncertainty, and recovery.
“My heart trusts in Him” acknowledges a faith that persists even when the heart itself doesn’t function perfectly.
“He helps me” reflects God’s presence through doctors, nurses, medical advances, and moments of unexpected peace.
“My heart leaps for joy” becomes a testimony, not of a perfect diagnosis, but of joy found despite the struggle.
Psalm 28:7 reframes the heart, not just as an organ that can fail, but as a place where trust, resilience, and praise are still possible. CHD awareness honors brave hearts that beat differently, and this verse reminds us that every heart is held and strengthened by God, no matter how it was formed.
