A closer look at the jacket I made at Project Upcycle…
The idea was a meeting of the material, model and the event itself: heavy upholstery wool, very cool local chef, and a red carpet runway event. Elements of the classic double breasted chef jacket blended into a more formal jacket. Hints of corduroy bring ivy and workwear nodes to the style.

The jacket was cut from dead-stock upholstery wool by Design Tex, paired with corduroy, buttons and shoulder pads from Apparel Impact.

Flooring it I was able to draft, cut and make this in 9-10 hours. This speed doesn’t play well with the details and techniques that I frequent, however working within the competitions timeframe was a nice reminder that it’s possible to visualize and make something in a crunch. Being accustomed to week long or month long projects, this shook up my routine in a way I didn’t know I needed.

Project Upcycle 2025 All Stars
Photos in loosely chronological order.
What a wild, unforgettable weekend.
I had just ~20 working hours to upcycle an entire outfit; meeting my model and materials at the starting line, Thursday night, after hauling a sewing machine up to Portsmouth. Friday and Saturday morning blurred into a frenzy of making it happen, culminating in the runway show Saturday night.
What I finished in that tight window far exceeded my expectations. The hard deadline and pace made for an exhilarating, refreshing challenge.
(More on the process, material transformation, and look concept coming in future posts.)
I love Project Upcycle for its incredible community. Huge thanks to everyone who made it possible… especially my model, the inspiring Evan Mallett: chef, teacher, sustainable local food chain innovator, and owner of Black Trumpet in Portsmouth, NH. If you’re ever in town, don’t miss dinner there. (Last slide: the perfect send-off meal to close out the weekend.)
