Handwoven Jala-work Gopalpur Tussar Saree......

Let me explain what "jala work" actually means, because it's a genuinely clever technique and I don't want you to just scroll past it.

"Jala" means net. That's literally what it is — a net of cords tied above the loom, above the weaver's head. Each cord is set up in advance to control one small part of the pattern. So when the weaver pulls a cord, it lifts just the right threads underneath, opening a tiny gap. The weaver passes a thread through that gap by hand. Pull the next cord, pass the thread again. Do that hundreds of times, and slowly, a motif appears.

This is how weavers made complicated, repeating patterns before machines existed. The "net" is basically doing the remembering for them — which threads to lift, in what order — so the same design can be built over and over without a mistake. Nothing here is printed on. Nothing is stuck on. It's built into the fabric, thread by thread, by someone's hands.

Now let's talk about Gopalpur Tussar — a wild silk from Jajpur district in Odisha. The silk is reeled off the cocoon by hand using a simple wooden tool, then spun on a charkha before it even reaches the loom. That's why it has that natural golden colour and a slightly textured feel — that's not a dye job, that's just what real tussar looks like.

So here I am presenting 2 beautiful Jalawork sarees in Gopalpur tusser

1) Turmeric Yellow with Red pallu
2) Lime Yellow with Royal Blue Pallu

Grab it before it sells out.

A cotton saree with a bit of a double life.

Let me explain, because the fabric on this one actually carries two different histories at once.

The base is cotton, and the applique work on it is cut from gamcha fabric — yes, the same red-and-white checked cloth you've probably seen around a fisherman's neck or a laborer's shoulder in Bengal and Odisha. "Gamcha" literally means "wiping cloth" in Bengali (ga = body, mochha = to wipe). It's about as unglamorous an origin as a textile can have. For generations it's been the cloth of people who work with their hands — light, cotton, made to survive heat and sweat and everyday life, nothing precious about it.

The applique technique that's cutting and stitching that gamcha onto this saree has a completely different backstory. It comes from Pipili, a small town in Odisha, where artisans have been doing this work for over 800 years, originally stitching canopies for the chariots at Puri's Rath Yatra. They called it Chandua. Peacocks, elephants, suns, moons, lotuses — shapes cut from cloth and layered by hand, stitch by stitch, onto a base fabric. It's slow work, and it was once reserved for temple offerings, not clothing.

So what you're actually looking at here is a laborer's cloth and a temple craft, meeting on the same six yards. The gamcha's checks and stripes get cut into the same motifs artisans have been stitching in Pipili for centuries, then placed onto cotton by hand. Nothing here is printed or traced. You can run your fingers along the edges and feel the stitching.

It sounds like an odd pairing on paper, honestly. But that's what makes it interesting to us — a fabric that was never meant to be decorative, given the exact treatment usually reserved for something sacred.

We're launching this as a small batch, handmade by artisans in Odisha. Once this run sells out, the next one will take a while, because none of this is machine-made.
