In today’s era, so many of us wear an outfit once, maybe twice, and then it just sits in the cupboard. We buy, we wear, we move on. But for our dadi-Nani clothes was precious. So instead of throwing away a worn-out piece, they asked themselves, “How can I give this a new life?”
And out of that thought, a beautiful craft was born. It’s called appliqué. Here’s how it works.
Small pieces of fabric are cut into shapes, like flowers, birds, and geometric patterns. Then they are stitched onto a bigger piece of cloth. An old, plain, tired fabric suddenly becomes something new, with a whole new look.
The word itself comes from French, and it means “applied.” But the craft in India is much older than the word we use for it. So the next time you see an appliqué piece, remember. It started with women who believed nothing should go to waste. It’s patience, creativity, and love, stitched together.
