A year ago I filed the paperwork. No inventory. No full product line. Just a conviction that wouldn’t leave me alone: the diaspora deserves to see itself on the things we carry when we travel.

Did you know there's a Black woman on page 26 of your U.S. passport whose legacy deserves to be celebrated? 🤎

Her name is Dr. Anna Julia Cooper — scholar, educator, activist, and the only woman quoted in the pages of the U.S. passport. She was born into slavery in Raleigh, North Carolina and went on to earn her PhD at 66 from the Sorbonne in Paris. Her words have been crossing borders with every American traveler since 2007.

In 2024, I experienced what I call my “Great Reset.”

After 20 years in marketing, I was laid off while sick with COVID and suddenly reeling from the loss of my father. In my deepest season of grief and vulnerability, I watched the job market signal loud and clear what it thought older Black women were worth.

I decided I would not wait for that market to change its mind.

Asali Origins became official one year ago yesterday. Today, on Equal Pay Day, I’m still here—building on my own terms and defining my own value.

To every woman navigating her own reset: Until the gap is closed...

One year ago on March 25, 2025, I started Asali Origins. I wanted to see iconic African and Caribbean landmarks on tote bags, t-shirts, and travel accessories. I looked everywhere and couldn't find them the way I envisioned alongside other famous landmarks.

So during Black History Month I built it. In Women's History Month, I made it official. 🩷🤎

For the travelers who carry their heritage with them. For the culture-keepers who want the diaspora represented everywhere they go. For every Black woman who's ever stood in front of a landmark that shaped or represented her ancestors and thought — this should be on everything.

Happy National Girl Scout Day! 🍪✨

This is our founder’s mom — repping Troop 3-240 in New York City. And yes, she is THAT girl. 💚

Black girls have been showing up in Girl Scouts since 1913 — even when they had to fight for their seat at the table. By the 1950s, the organization was actively desegregating, and troops like this one were part of that shift. These young women weren’t just earning badges — they were making history.

At Asali Origins, that’s the lineage we come from. Women who moved with purpose, built community, and never waited for permission to take up space.
