People ask me this question a lot; "how come the glass bends but the decorations just don't melt flat? How do you do that?". The answer is, 2 trips to the kiln! The first trip to get all of the design elements (decorations) on and in the right place then fused at a lower temp, and the second trip to shape (bend, melt, etc.) the glass into a Votive holder, at a higher temp but a shorter time in the kiln. It's almost like magic!😄

Happy Wednesday! I was thinking about a client who was distraught over her beloved cross that had fallen off her wall in her home and had broken. I told her I would happily make one for her if she wanted. I am not a religious person per se, I believe and respect others who are one with their faith. She told me I could do what I wanted, but she wanted something more symbolic but 'happy' and that she loved flowers. So I made this (and several others). It is funny what we consider inspiration, for me it was words that painted a picture, for her a much loved but broken piece of her personal history. Feel free to pass this on!

This is a picture of one of the first "real" pendants I made about 14-15 years ago, lol! The huge bail almost overpowers it, but I still love it. I've come a very long way and trust me, that's a GOOD thing!

I had a booth at a weekend faire and it was early on a Saturday morning. This beautiful young gal was hovering near the displays of two different types of pendants I had out. She kept picking up each one. Finally after 5 minutes of watching her agonize, I went over and chatted with her. I asked her who she was shopping for and she said that it was for herself. She really loved the sunset and trees pendant but couldn't let go of the Club pendant, Flower design. I asked her what the occasion was and she said, "I'm meeting my boyfriend's sister tonight and we are going to have dinner and hit a show.", I told her, "well the flower pendant is understated and is designed for casual wear and it also shifts colors depending on the light. It's light-weight and can be worn daily if you want. The other piece is beautiful but more of a statement, once-in-a-while piece. Besides, the blue one will really make your eyes stand out as well!" She finally relaxed and smiled and said, "thank you! I'll take that one!". It was nice being able to help someone solve their dilemma. It turned out to be a great day!

These are not the best examples, but one of the many things I love about my work, and many glass artists will think I'm crazy, but it is cold working. The larger piece on the left is part of a big square I designed and cut pieces out of. However, it was also a test piece for some other techniques. The from that piece I used a diamond saw, then a ring saw, then 2 different types of grinders to get the shape of the pendant on the right. Again, not the best example, the pendant was also a test. Anyway my favorite part of glass fusing is taking something that started much larger and shaping it into something wearable like a pendant! It is satisfying to literally see things take shape!

This is a print I have had for just over 40 years. I was so enchanted with it when I was young (much, much younger!). It hangs on a wall in the area where I do a vast majority of my glass work, cutting, planning, painting, etc. It offers a sense of calm and sweetness when I get frustrated. Isn't it funny how something we've lugged around our life for so long whose meaning is now totally different than it was when we bought it?
