When my sister in law Jess passed away, a part of me died too. The part of me that was oblivious to sudden, tragic loss and crippling grief. The part of me that thought it’ll never happen to one of us. The part of me that went through the motions instead of stopping to take in all the little joys and wonders of this short and precious life.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
I’ve spent the last few months with my brother and family, grieving, healing, and trying our best to find a way forward. Social media just seems so unimportant right now. It used to be something I put so much time and effort into but the words and creativity and inspiration and desire to share my life just aren’t there yet.⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
Someday I’ll be back, but whether it’s soon or distant I just don’t know yet. I can feel myself slowly crawling out of this hole, but I also know it’s a place I will retreat back to for a long time to come. Grief is a wicked weird beast. One moment you can be happy and smiling and laughing, and the next it can feel like your insides are ripping out. It’s something you carry with you for the rest of your life, and I’m still figuring out how to carry mine.⁣⁣⁣

It sounds cliche, but please hug your people. Tell them you love them as often as you can. Appreciate each moment you have together. Be grateful for every day that you have here. Suddenly losing someone you deeply care about and that you thought you had so much more time to spend with is a raw pain I don’t wish on anyone, and if you’ve been through it, I’m so sorry.⁣⁣⁣

Each morning since we’ve been back in Reno, a yellow butterfly has visited our backyard when we let the dogs out. I always say “hi Jess!” because I know she’s with me. Energy is never lost, just transferred, and I believe she is all around us - everyone who knew and loved her.⁣⁣⁣

I don’t feel like I need to constantly share my feelings on social media to validate my grief. It’s my own personal journey and something that lives inside my own heart. This is not about sympathy, although so many of you have shown your love and support in different ways and I am forever grateful for you. I just want you to know where I’ve been and that I’ll be back when I’m ready. 🫶🏼⁣

Continued prayers & gratitude for all of the brave firefighters and first responders battling the Caldor Fire. My heart is with everyone affected, humans and animals that have lost their homes, and evacuees that have been displaced.

Designing, patterning, cutting, and sewing the 18-piece patchwork kimono from start to finish. ✂️🧵🪡

Diving head first into the creative process and bringing my ideas to life is what I love most about being a designer. It’s a mental focus and escape all at once. I always have a general idea of what I want the end result to be, but I like to let the design show me how it’s going to work out and adjust accordingly along the way.

These patchwork kimonos will all be one of a kind. Coming soon. 💫
