🚒A Special Thank You to Retired Chief John Swan 🚒

Today we want to take a moment to honor and thank Retired Chief John Swan for his many storied years of dedicated service to the City of Colona.

Chief Swan’s leadership left a lasting impact not only on our police department, but on the entire community. His steady guidance, commitment to public safety, and genuine care for the people of Colona have helped shape the city we know today.

“Thank you” hardly seems enough for the years of service, sacrifice, and leadership he gave to our community. Chief Swan, please know you will always be part of the Colona Police Department family, and your legacy of service will not be forgotten. 💙

Please joining us in giving a heartfelt thank you to Deputy Fire Chief Eric Nurnberg as he closes the book on a nearly 24-year career with the Iowa City Fire Department.

Deputy Chief Nurnberg was hired in October 2001, promoted to Lieutenant in 2007, Captain in 2010, Battalion Chief in 2013, and Deputy Chief in 2017. He has earned designations as Executive Fire Officer and Chief Fire Officer. During his time with ICFD, Deputy Chief Nurnberg's special assignments included public education team, fire investigation team, Emergency Medical Services Coordinator, and Special Operations Team.

Deputy Chief Nurnberg's career accomplishments were numerous, including serving as Operations Officer for the City's response to COVID-19, co-authoring the book, "Firepsyche: Mental Toughness and the VALOR Mindset for the Fireground," and serving as a strategic advisor to training programs in New York City, Baltimore, Milwaukee, and throughout the National Capitol Region.

Next week, Deputy Chief Nurnberg will join University of Iowa Health Care as the Director of Emergency Readiness and Response.

Deputy Chief Nurnberg had these words to share about his career with Iowa City Fire:

“This is the best job in the world. From a young age, the people I have admired most are those who displayed a selfless desire to help others in times of trouble. I am blessed to have had the opportunity to try to emulate that commitment. The fulfillment and success I have experienced is entirely due to the fantastic people I have worked with. I’ll miss helping people in crisis, and especially doing it alongside a team who will overcome any obstacle to fulfill their calling.”
