Vivianite, an exceptionally beautiful hydrated iron phosphate mineral often called the death crystal, possesses the bizarre ability to grow directly on decomposing corpses.
When human or animal bodies undergo decomposition in phosphate-rich, waterlogged environments lacking oxygen, so the iron in bones and teeth reacts chemically with the surrounding environment.
Initially appearing clear or white, the resulting crystal formations change to a striking deep blue or vibrant green hue upon exposure to light.
This rare chemical reaction creates a hauntingly unique geological phenomenon that completely captivates scientists and mineral collectors worldwide.
I currently have 2 vivianite crystals available for purchase at the Hocking Hills Farmers Flea Market.
