The Layers of an Old Quilt 🧵❤️🪡

As I am cutting tattered quilts for Santa wine covers, I can’t help reflecting that the reason I love old quilts is that they hold so much more than fabric.

They hold layers of history.

There’s the obvious layer: the fabrics, colors, patterns, and stitches. But then there are the stories hiding underneath. A dress that was worn before it became a quilt. Scraps saved because they were too precious to throw away. Pieces from a child’s clothing, a worn-out shirt, or curtains from a family home.

And then there are the hands that made it.

Someone sat down with these little pieces and patiently stitched them together, one block at a time. Maybe around a kitchen table, during quiet evenings, or while children played nearby. Someone loved these scraps enough to give them another life.

Then came the years of use. The soft spots. The repairs. The faded colors. The little imperfections that tell us this quilt wasn’t made to sit on a shelf. It was loved.

That’s what draws me to old quilts. I’m not just seeing an antique textile. I’m seeing all the lives, homes, seasons, and hands that came before me.

Every quilt has layers.

And sometimes, the most beautiful part is wondering what stories are still tucked between the stitches. 🧵
