I’ve learned that some of the best things I find in this business are the things I wasn’t looking for.

When I travel to meet with our partners, vendors and mills, my schedule is packed on our buying trips. Back-to-back meetings. Conversations about cloth, construction, fit, quality, and what we can do better.

But I intentionally leave big pieces of the day completely open.

No meeting.
No agenda.
Nowhere I’m supposed to be.

I wander.

And over the years, I’ve realized that’s where a lot of the magic happens.

There’s something about not trying to accomplish anything that gives curiosity room to take over. You notice the booth tucked around the corner. You stop to talk to the artisan you’ve never heard of. You pick something up simply because it catches your eye.

That’s exactly how I found this brand, Officine Creative.

I had never heard of them.

I picked up one shoe and immediately noticed the quality. The materials. The weight. The construction. The little details you only appreciate when someone really cares about what they’re making.

Then I picked up another.

I liked it even more.

Two hours later, I wasn’t just interested in the shoes. I had fallen in love with the product, the story behind it, and most importantly, the people making it.

There was no agenda item that said, “Find a new shoemaker today.”

I just followed my curiosity.

And now, somewhere across the world, their production team is making our first order.

It’ll be arriving in the shop soon.

That’s one of my favorite parts of this business.

You can plan the meetings. You can plan the buying. You can plan the strategy.

But you have to leave a little room for discovery.

Because sometimes the most interesting things you bring home are the things you never went looking for.
