From The Voice of the Martyrs: On this day in 1956, missionaries Jim Elliot, Pete Fleming, Ed McCully, Nate Saint and Roger Youderian were violently killed by the Waodani tribe in Ecuador. The five had spent months contacting the Waodanis through over-flights and gift exchanges via an ingenious bucket drop. Though the tribe had a history of violent encounters with outsiders, the men had decided they'd established a degree of mutual trust that would support direct contact.

Within two years of their deaths, Elisabeth Elliot and Nate Saint’s sister made a friendly and lasting contact with the Waodanis, and translation of the Bible into the Waodani language began. One by one, the men who murdered the missionaries became believers in the One who sent the five to reach them.

In John 19:11, Jesus tells Pontius Pilate, "You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above." This verse reminds us that ultimately, all authority comes from God. As we look at the leaders around us, we must consider that they are in their positions for a reason.

Sometimes we may question why certain individuals are in leadership roles, but we must remember that God allows leaders to rise and fall according to His divine plan. Whether they are good or bad, our leaders are a reflection of us as a society. Just as God allowed Pilate to have authority over Jesus for a greater purpose, He allows our leaders to be in their positions for reasons beyond our understanding.

Instead of focusing solely on critiquing our leaders, let us also reflect on ourselves. Are we living in a way that honors God and reflects His values? Are we actively seeking to be the kind of leaders that God desires us to be in our own spheres of influence? Let us remember that the leaders we have are ultimately a reflection of the state of our hearts and our society.

As we navigate the complexities of leadership and authority, let us trust in God's sovereignty and seek to be the kind of people who deserve leaders who lead with wisdom, integrity, and compassion.

She LOVES the rainbow, but secular culture has hijacked the image to represent something unbiblical.
