Love this stuff! Prince looked like he was getting scratches during mud season. Washed his legs, dried them, and put Silver Honey everywhere he had pink warm spots. I was ready for the battle to begin. I was shocked the next day all pink and warm spots were gone!

Do you know how to read fly repellent and insecticide labels? Here is a breakdown of different ingredients so you can make the best decision for your horse and wallet next time you make a purchase.

PYRETHRINS
* made from organic compounds derived from Chrysanthemum plants
* Acts on the nervous system of insects making it an insecticide
* Biodegradable
* Breaks down quickly in the sun
* Synergists like like piperonyl butoxide(PBO) or bicyclothepthe dicarboximide are sometimes added to make it last longer.
* piperonyl but oxide and bicyclohepthe dicarbicimide are useless on their own

PYRETHROIDS common name PERMETHRIN

* Man made pyrethrins
* Toxic to aquatic animals
* More stable then Pyrethrins making it long lasting

Look for the small print, not the marketing on the bottle. Yes, the EPA controls what it can be marketed as, but the percentages in small print are the information you need.

You get what you pay for when buying fly sprays.

Did you know rotating your fly spray can be more effective? Using the same sprays weekly, monthly, and yearly can cause resistance. Not to mention expenses. It's recommended to rotate between classes.

Do you have the right product for the job? Before you spray your horse, ask yourself these questions?
* How many flies are there? As seasons change, so does the fly population.
* What is the weather like?
On a humid day, your horse will need sweat resistant fly spray.
* What is your horses activity level? Turnout, training, competition, or in a stall?

When buying fly sprays you get what you pay for. The better the ingredients means more $$$. Why pay more money for the expensive ingredients when you don't need sweat resistant? Or buying cheap fly spray and complain it don't work but the truth is, it's not right for the conditions for the product your using.
