Hi friends! I just because aware of this marvelous article about quilting. Even if you're not a quilter, I would recommend it!

At our darkest moments, why do so many of us take up quilting?

I can never decide which part of my business I like best - the customers, the quilters, or the quilts! I've had so many fun (and interesting) conversations with customers and quilters - I'm learning so much about Amish culture and what the quilters' lives are like. Imagine preparing for 500 guests at your farm for a wedding! Or having 8 children under the age of 12 (and still having time to quilt!) I'll post more soon!

Ack! I've been so busy taking care of customers and sending their quilt tops out to be quilted that I've completely neglected to post photos of the gorgeous quilting that our Amish friends have finished lately. Here are just a few examples!

Winter is quilting season! When gardening and other outdoor chores are finished for the season the quilt frames come out. Now is the time to get your quilt top to us for finishing. We are booking up quickly; by getting in touch with us now we can get your quilt top in the queue and have it finished by spring (at the latest). Once the weather is nice again, most quilting comes to a halt as the quilters return to gardening and other summer tasks. Please see amishquiltingbyhand.com for all details! Shown below: sewing the binding onto a vintage quilt with "invisible" stitching.

Thanks, friends, for checking out my new page. While you may not have an interest in quilting, perhaps someone on your friends list does? I'd appreciate it if you could share this page. Hand-quilting is a dying art, and is becoming les and less utilized now that machine quilting is fast, (fairly) cheap, and readily available. I prefer life in the slow lane! Thanks so much!

This whole business began when I found myself with a collection of vintage quilt tops (purchased at local Midwest farm auctions) and never enough time to quilt them myself. I placed an ad in the local paper and was delighted by the number of responses. I began by sending each woman a quilt top to finish, to see what her stitching was like, how dependable she is, and how much time each needs to complete a quilt. I am now working with eight Amish women; the quilting is beautiful - tiny, even stitches - and am excited to offer this service to quilters everywhere. Hand quilting seems to have been left behind in these days of longarm creativity and ease. Personally, I believe there is still a place for hand quilting. It adds warmth, humanity, and a lovely hand-crafted feel to my quilts. And after all, isn't that what quilting is all about? Check out our website and let us know how we can help you complete your quilt!
