Some tips for new quilters and maybe a reminder for the more seasoned quilter!

Cut off the selvages before you start cutting for your quilt. Save a piece of the selvage where the color circles, mfg and designer name and name of grouping is so you have that just in case you need more fabric!
Cut accurately and sew accurately ¼ inch seams. If sewing two 5 ½ inch squares together, make sure it measures 10 ½ x 5 ½ when sewn. If not, find the reason and fix it! It makes a big difference once you start sewing all those blocks together!
Press, don’t iron! Meaning use and up and down motion with the iron. Don’t leave the iron on the fabric and move the iron. That distorts the fabric!
Trim your threads. Make sure you sew to the edge of the fabric where you are suppose to so your seams stay, but be sure to clip your threads so the back of the top looks as clean as possible. Take time to clean up the top of the quilt, too! Cut all the threads.
If your quilt top doesn’t have a border please baste around the edge of your quilt so your seams don’t open. Usually ¼ inch or less from the outside edge of your top.
When measuring up the backing make sure you give the long armer 4 inches bigger on all 4 sides. Cut off your selvages of your seams if you have to piece your backing.
Square up your backing. There are utube videos out there as to how to do that.
There are probably more items that can be added to this list, but this is what I have thought of now. Just remember a long armer can quilt some of the excess away, but, if you were the long armer, just how much would you want to be expected to “quilt in”?

First off, No we’re not retiring yet!

We have been blessed with lots of quilt friends who appreciate Tom’s quilting and love to have him quilt their quilts and he loves quilting them! We want to continue that friendship but we need to put the incoming quilts on pause for awhile!

No, as far as we know, we are not sick, we are healthy, so don’t worry! We just have an overflowing closet of people’s quilts to quilt! (right now 80 to be exact!) We need to get caught up, breathe and maybe take a little vacation.

With all that being said, as of April 5, 2019, we will not be taking in anymore quilts til Jan 1, 2020. We have talked to a few people whose quilts we are still expecting to come in, but other than those, we are not going to take in any more until after the first of the year. We plan to work on the ones we have in the closet and then take time to breathe and maybe get some of our own quilting done, or like I said, maybe a vacation!

Please take care and get back to us after the first of the year!

Wow! Like I've been hearing where has the summer gone? I'm like the little girl in the DQ blizzard commercial, I'm hanging onto summer for a long time yet!
We have been busy quilting for "toppers" (aka, people who like making the quilt tops and then have someone else quilt them). Since Tom has retired, he is busy at the Statler everyday!
Hope your summer is going well and that you sew more than you unsew! If you are a "topper" or just too busy to quilt yourself, send us an email!
Take care, Diann & Tom

Happy Easter week. We have been busy quilting and eating left overs from Easter. Last night we ate at Subway just to not to have to eat left overs again.
We've been quilting a lot of the jelly roll quilts. Doing one right now in greens/blues/purples. We are quilting it in purple jewel thread by Signature and in an edge 2 edge pattern that has dragonflies, flowers, bees, butterflies, lots of spring/summer fresh air design...looks much better than the grey skies we have outside today. Have a good day!
