Tommy Schweinitz, a teenage resident of Minnesota, gained widespread recognition through a special partnership between Make-A-Wish Minnesota and Minnesota United FC. What occurred? Tommy, a 17-year-old soccer player and ardent fan of Minnesota United, was diagnosed with Ewing sarcoma, a rare form of cancer. After undergoing treatment, he made the challenging decision to have part of his leg amputated to prevent the cancer from spreading. His Make-A-Wish experience entailed becoming a professional soccer player for Minnesota United. The team surprised him at home and signed him to a one-day first-team contract. He trained with the team, participated in matchday activities, and walked out with players, participated in the coin toss and starting lineup photo, and scored a ceremonial goal in front of the crowd at Allianz Field. This moment held greater significance than mere symbolism, as it showcased the capacity of sports organizations and charities to create meaningful experiences for children facing serious illnesses. Tommy has continued to engage in soccer, including amputee soccer programs, sustaining his passion for the game.
