When I closed Fellow Shop’s physical location I decided I wanted a fresh start for my business and so changed the name to Monologue to represent the idea that each piece has its own story. Now as I’m inflicting carpal tunnel on myself I’m wishing I would have kept those pre-made Fellow Shop tags 😂 Hope you’ll come check out these handwritten tags for yourself this weekend at the pop up I’m doing with outside of 💛

Stumbled across a page in my journal from January, when the year was new and offering itself up as a time for reflection. It was nice to be reminded of what I want for this year, and see that even though so much has changed since January, these ideas still apply. Maybe they’ll resonate with you too!

✨NEW DECADE PRACTICES✨

Advocate for myself more. When I’m having a hard day, or week, or even month, treat myself like a loved one. Ask myself “What can I do to help you? How I can I help you feel good right now? Remind myself I deserve to be and feel nurtured.

Feel grateful for all the moving parts that make up my body. It’s easy to notice the bloat and the itching and the fatigue, but I want to shift my focus to the deep breaths I’m able to take, the unique form that belongs only to me, the way my senses function to allow creation of an understanding of my environment and it’s stimuli.

Slow down. What does it even mean to be slow? To watch and listen and enjoy? I want to take a break from flitting, and not feel guilty for it. In a world governed by dogma in which time and money are inseparable, what does it mean to challenge this notion? What does it look and feel like to spend time doing things that cost nothing, that don’t make any money? What’s it like to make something unsellable?
Explore these questions in depth this year.

Today George Floyd was laid to Rest In Power. Today I’m thinking about the ways in which his death ushered in the opportunity for me to learn, to try harder, listen more, be better. Up until recently I’ve let my “open mind” be enough. I now understand that I have to be actively anti-racist, and that this means there is a lot of learning, and unlearning, I need to do, and keep doing for the rest of my life.

I pushed my nephew’s stroller down the street under the sun today, thinking about how we as a family get to teach him much earlier than we all learned about how to be an anti-racist. How to listen. How to use his white privilege to advocate for and protect his Black peers. I’m disappointed that it’s taken me this long to begin actively working toward understanding my own and my country’s white supremacy, but I’m grateful that it’s happening now.

Birthday wishes for Breonna Taylor sent to Kentucky D.A. Daniel Cameron asking him to charge the officers responsible for her death. She would have been 27 today.
I’m working to educate myself, and to participate in anti-racist activism. I’m grappling with the ways I’ve been able to ignore tragedy because of my privilege. I’m calling time’s up on myself and my white friends and family: it’s time for us to work. Let’s keep learning, keep listening. When we fumble, when we feel fear, let’s take a long hard look at it and try again. Let us not give up, not ever.

We’re stepping aside this week to . I encourage you to mute white accounts June 1-7 and follow black makers, activists, and educators. Swipe for accounts to follow, and fellow white people: let’s do the work this week, and every week after. It is our privilege to stand in between our black brothers and sisters and the white people who threaten and take their lives. It is our job to dismantle whiteness* as an institution of racism and oppression.
