As a Mexican-American female business owner and designer at Sew Loka, Claudia Biezunski-Rodriguez is breaking down barriers, blurring societal norms, and proudly welcoming BIPOC and underserved communities through affordable, edgy, and upcycled handmade goods. She is an advocate

for slow fashion and works mostly with recycled and upcycled materials to create one-of-one clothing and accessories.

Sew Loka Day!!! 🧵🪡✨ Thirteen years ago, with a six-month-old baby girl and a head full of dreams, we opened the doors to Sew Loka. Today, those doors led us to the San Diego City Council chambers, where the City of San Diego officially proclaimed February 13th as Sew Loka Day 🙌🏽

This shop gives our whole family purpose, and moments like this remind us why we pour everything we have into it. We were not born in San Diego — but this city is our home. It has embraced us, believed in us, and held us up in ways we could never fully express. To our friends, family, and community who have had our backs since day one: this proclamation belongs to you, too. It will be our lifelong duty to repay this city by giving back and making a positive impact on this generation and the next 🙏🏽💯

Join us Saturday, February 14th to celebrate Sew Loka Day and experience “Love, Always” — the first solo art show by the incredibly talented Selena Idioma. From 12pm–8pm, our studio will be filled with art, music, coffee, an exclusive tote bag drop, and hands-on interactive activities for the whole family. This is a day of love, creativity, and community — and we want to see YOU!!! 😍

And also mark your calendars for the following Saturday, February 21st, for “Sew Rebellious: Where Creativity Meets Cause” — a fundraiser workshop series in collaboration with Gabriela Ponce Curlango right here at the studio Our goal? To raise $3K in one day for the ACLU through back-to-back tote bag sewing workshops featuring a one-day-only, limited edition patch design. 100% of proceeds go directly to the ACLU. So grateful to have been part of San Diego FC's Unprecedented Unity Night ⚽🖤

I created three 1/1 cut & sew outfits from scratch using recycled fabrics and SDFC merch and jerseys — slow fashion, start to finish. It was an honor to showcase alongside such talented San Diego designers and creatives.

The San Diego City Council just proclaimed the second Sunday of November as SLOW FASHION DAY! We’re beyond grateful to make history as the first U.S. city to take this stand against textile waste!
