Flanders Fields is a war poem in the form of a rondeau, written during the First World War by Canadian physician Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae. He was inspired to write it on May 3, 1915, after presiding over the funeral of friend and fellow soldier Alexis Helmer, who died in the Second Battle of Ypres. According to legend, fellow soldiers retrieved the poem after McCrae, initially dissatisfied with his work, discarded it. “In Flanders Fields” was first published on December 8 of that year in the London-based magazine Punch.

Emily Dickinson was an American poet best known for her eccentric personality and her frequent themes of death and mortality. Although she was a prolific writer, only a few of her poems were published during her lifetime. Despite being mostly unknown while she was alive, her poetry nearly 1,800 poems altogether has become a staple of the American literary canon, and scholars and readers alike have long held a fascination with her unusual life.📚🇺🇸

📖 Gone with the Wind, novel by Margaret Mitchell, published in 1936. It won a Pulitzer Prize in 1937. Gone with the Wind is a sweeping romantic story about the American Civil War from the point of view of the Confederacy. In particular it is the story of Scarlett O’Hara, a headstrong Southern belle who survives the hardships of the war and afterward manages to establish a successful business by capitalizing on the struggle to rebuild the South.

✒️ Margaret Mitchell grew up in a family of storytellers who regaled her with firsthand accounts of their experiences during the American Civil War, which had ended just 35 years before her birth. An active tomboy, she played in the earthen fortifications that still surrounded her hometown of Atlanta and often went horseback riding with Confederate veterans. She also was a voracious reader and wrote numerous stories and plays throughout her youth.

✍️ Famous quotes from Gone With The Wind -

📚“Burdens are for shoulders strong enough to carry them.”

📚“After all, tomorrow is another day!”

📚“Well, my dear, take heart. Some day, I will kiss you and you will like it. But not now, so I beg you not to be too impatient.”

📚“My dear, I don't give a damn.”

📚“I can't think about that right now. If I do, I'll go crazy. I'll think about that tomorrow.”

📚“I'll think of it tomorrow, at Tara. I can stand it then. Tomorrow, I'll think of some way to get him back. After all, tomorrow is another day.”

📖 A Tale of Two Cities, by Charles Dickens, deals with the major themes of duality, revolution, and resurrection. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times in London and Paris, as economic and political unrest lead to the American and French Revolutions. The main characters in Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities — Doctor Alexandre Manette, Charles Darnay, and Sydney Carton — are all recalled to life, or resurrected, in different ways as turmoil erupts.

✒️ Charles Dickens, in full Charles John Huffam Dickens, English novelist, generally considered the greatest of the Victorian era. Dickens enjoyed a wider popularity during his lifetime than had any previous author. Much in his work could appeal to the simple and the sophisticated, to the poor and to the queen, and technological developments as well as the qualities of his work enabled his fame to spread worldwide very quickly.

✍️ Best quotes from A Tale of Two Cities -

📕 “A wonderful fact to reflect upon, that every human creature is constituted to be that profound secret and mystery to every other.”

📕 “It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known.”

📕 “You have been the last dream of my soul.”

📕 “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.”

📕 “I wish you to know that you have been the last dream of my soul.”
