10 years ago on this day, Julius and I drove from Humboldt County Animal Shelter to San Francisco, and my life forever changed. I’m so grateful to look back at every day with my sweet boi. There is something truly special about the dogs and cats; they show us what is important.

I’m a believer that your fur babies find you. A year before the shop, Matt and I bought our car together discussing the need for a hatchback for our future dog to ride in, but it wasn’t until the shop happened that our lives were suited to have one. I drove up to Humboldt on my Spring break from fashion school, and my mom, my sibling, and I set out to the animal shelters to find my dog.

The moment I saw him, I had a feeling. He had a calm, curious presence, and a slow tail wag. I didn’t take him home that day, but spent two days discussing with my family and Matt, I think that’s my dog!

The morning I went back to the city, my sibling and I went to Petco and they helped me pick out the basics of what I would need. A collar, harness, treats, and toys. Then we drove back to the shelter, and I adopted Julius on the spot.

Over the past 10 years, many of our loved fur babies have crossed the rainbow bridge, and I feel Julius knows and holds a soulful connection to the rainbow bridge where the dogs and cats watch over us and protect us. I’m so thankful for my time in this life with my boi, and I cherish each day. Happy Gotcha Day Julius!

My whole heart goes out to Jamaica.

I feel sorrow that with all the technology, brilliant and influential minds in engineering and systems building, and the number of people that do invest their lives into humanitarian and global efforts, we just can’t pull it together collectively to discover what it means to live harmoniously with our planet. Now, a beautiful country with less infrastructure than we have will suffer for it.

Jamaica is a country I never imagined I would spend time in, until my friend was assigned to the Peace Corps there. During my first trip to visit her, Hurricane Sandy, a category one hurricane, came directly through the middle of the island. We were in Montego Bay which being on the North coast was largely buffered, but Kingston experienced quite a bit of damage and power outages for a few days.

After the peak of the storm, and I took a short walk to the park at the end of her block. It was a surreal moment of stillness where the sky had calmed down and we were two friends who knew each other from high school living this experience together in not just anywhere in the world, but the extraordinary island of Jamaica.

It is heartbreaking to look back at 13 years ago as a foreshadowing of what was to return but much worse, and today, I will be in prayer for the people and animals of that island.

31 Days of Frightful Frames.

We framed this Chuck Sperry collectible card from a concert in a haunting, ornate red moulding.
We added a red accent mat to tie the design together, and a woven, slightly shimmery mat to add texture and an eerie glow.

Salah and I made a spooktacular Halloween playlist that has it all to make your bones jiggle. Dancey, cinematic, one two many metal tracks 🤘🎸, and centuries of eerie classics. Enjoy if you dare! 🎃👻

Happy International dog day, and yes, I am a day late because I fell asleep in a cuddly dog pile as I was thinking about what to write.

Four years ago on international dog day, we moved into our apartment and presented to the doggos their new backyard. Clo ran in circles and Jules had the biggest smile. I added the video here.

The yard has opened a sort of curious adventure for them. They sit in the sun every morning, and are always playing silly games with the animals that come through. It’s all peace with the bumble bees, butterflies, and small birds, but if you are an unwelcome visitor like, a squirrel, or crow, beware all five pounds of Clo will come running at you. Jules might leap halfway across the yard from the deck!

It’s no secret that my doggos and I are attached at the hip, but we wouldn’t have it any other way.

I had a really intense dream over the weekend where I met an ancient dog with blue, yellow, and black colors and patterns like a caterpillar.

I was cautious at first, but it bowed and did a little dance like it wanted to play. Chloe was with me and it was respectful of her.

In the dream, we were in between worlds, and this dog could move fluidly as it didn’t rely on physical space, so it passed me and stood in the sun to show off its beautiful colors.

Both Julius and Chloe, I dreamt of before they came to be my doggos, so I believe this doggo is a guardian angel I will meet again and maybe in real life!

Because of the dream, I asked my dad to send me photos of my first doggos. Midnight, the black German Shepard mix, we got when I was seven, and she would go with me on all my adventures. She always had one ear up and one floppy ear. She passed away when I was 17, but I still miss her with all my heart.

Rosie, the big floof, I don’t remember as clearly except one memory at Christmas I was hanging off of her (likely how I was in this photo) and she wasn’t particularly fond of it. When she passed we planted an apple tree in her honor.

This Saturday we are celebrating ten years of our business

In the beginning, I loved watching the love of my life step into this ownership role. With no experience, he really took to it in a way that was incredibly impressive. I was in graduate school for the first two and a half years, so my confidence with the business took more time. Although, fashion school informed my consultation style and relationships with our clients. I shared my knowledge and eye that I developed in school to create beautiful compositions with the framing. It worked as within two years we had a portfolio of over 30 companies, including the SFMoMA.

Still, we had some far greater than normal hurdles to overcome and unprecedented. We saw indescribable things together that no one we know can understand: the opioid crisis overtake downtown, the pandemic, watching businesses shutter all around us. Those are days, that I like to pretend never existed!

The story goes, we decided not to quit and to keep pushing, and things changed significantly for the better, and we are now four years with our cute store in Cole Valley.

I personally have made it my obsession to create beauty. There are so many ways to do so: painting, gardening, fashion, taking walks in nature, using your imagination, having meaningful conversations, taking photographs, creating social media content, dancing, music, writing, trying something new, connecting with animals and plants, looking at architecture, going to the movies, building a collection, cooking, cleaning, eating at new restaurants, solving a puzzle, playing games, learning about a new place, traveling, dreaming…..

The absolute best part of my business isn’t seeing the art, it is seeing the art through the lens of our clients. Because the art itself is one thing, but what is important is how we experience it. We learn through others experiences and then we grow.

I hope to celebrate with you all this Saturday. Folks have been asking about dress code- I am wearing a black gown so classy is the dress code, although, there is a little bit of a party theme: if you walked through Golden Gate Park and discover a fairytale magic frame shop.

Coincidentally, Lady Gaga’s new album, Mayhem, came out on the 15 year anniversary of my accident. Her music was part of my strength at the time, and at this time, she represents feminine magic, humanity, creativity, kindness, beauty, diversity, and power. And yes, it went from sunny doggos on the porch to dumping rain while I edited my photos. I hope whoever reads this is doing well, finding grace, hope, and resilience.
