“As Laura Smalley, who was born into slavery in Texas, recalled that bittersweet moment in a 1941 interview, “We didn’t know where to go. They turned us out just like, you know, you turn out cattle.” - Time Article https://time.com/6286476/juneteenth-when-did-slavery-end/
With the step forward in the adoption of Juneteenth as a national holiday comes the dark side of what happens when an aspect of the Black community enters the mainstream.
Even though last year was the first official year of celebration (the Black community had been celebrating it for hundreds of years); the appropriation has already started.
But of course it doesn’t stop there, revisionist history is already taking a hold of this blessed celebration.
Knowing this we must NOT stop correcting misconceptions, and false information.
For me, the first place I start is with the real story of the “end of slavery” -when our ancestors were actually free….
But are we free?
This article not only discusses the truth about the “ending” of slavery but it also talks about what that meant for so many that had never known a life before it.
