Jasmin Zorlu Millinery

Jasmin Zorlu Millinery I hand sculpt fish leather, buntal straw (jinsin), and reloved wool sweaters into hats that are inspired by the Art Deco era.

My hats have sold to Erykah Badu, Kat Von D, Neil Young and Tom Waits. 'Sculptural Headwear for Earthlings' I handmake the hats locally in Santa Fe, New Mexico, one by one, by hand, incorporating eco friendly materials whenever possible. Aquatic leather and recycled cashmere are my favorites!

Continuing my silk flowermaking education (started with Maor Zabar at East Village Hats last month in NYC) with my new dear milliner friend, Milliner Amy Smith , who invited me to her home in Sebastapol to make flowers with her. A Belgian friend gave me some traditional flowermaking tools in 2018 when I was visiting her in Antwerp, after attending London Hat week. It was so fun to play with Amy. It’s very important to arrange play dates with your friends as an adult. What creative play dates have you made lately with your friends?

I almost saved the trim to make into a real hat, but then I thought, why not be decadent? Make what I want to make and not be concerned about whether it will sell or not. What are the chances you would rock this walnut husk dyed cashmere headband? I dare ya.

Thanks, Keiko, for being an amazing shoemaking teacher! I really admire you. I wish I had your kind of energy. I haven’t made boots in 24 years, since ! My father told me that his father and younger brother used to make their own equestrian boots in Turkey. Watch this reel for a funny fail in the middle.

Love love love creative reuse shops! Bought all this material for $224! Anny came from Philly to go to a Derby event with me and bought sweater samples that she will unravel to reuse. Now have to ship it back to San Francisco!

Learned how to make handmade silk flowers with yesterday at ! I have all the supplies and tools already at home in San Francisco just waiting for me. I really appreciate my Belgian milliner friend gifting me a set of non-electrified metal flowermaking tools. Glad I keep all my scraps! Thank you Maor and Julia! I also was super surprised to have in my class! She was in the first Parsons millinery class that I taught in 2012 (Lady Gaga’s little sister was also in it). Check out her beautiful blue flower!

My dream boots are coming along, thanks to the talented teaching of Keiko at . I flew across the US from California to take her 5 day ‘Make your Dream shoes class’. I can’t believe it’s been 24 years since I handmade a pair of shoes! I actually started crying when I put my uppers together, I was so moved emotionally. They will be lined in silver foiled leather from . I’ll hopefully be able to fold the tops down for a different look. I said out loud today to my workshop mates (who are making amazing boots also) that these would be really good boots to get on a spaceship to visit a different planet and meet with an aliens.

It was fun to attend the last night. Towards the end of the night, I spotted an incredibly dressed young man who’s a fashion designer. I love his style! His shirt reminded me of the Medici Renaissance clothing which I saw in Florence at a museum. He made everything that he was wearing (including the clutch). Check out his page!

It took me 35 hours to deconstruct a Chinese silk jacket, linen jacket, silk jersey turtleneck and other off-cuts of silk and velvet, and the reconstruct them together like a complex puzzle. I had to add some store-bought silk dupioni from . My cocktail hat that I made a few years ago is made of arapaima fish leather from the Amazon (probably from tannery .kaeru), vintage German glass berries, goose biots feathers from , electra beetle wings from an Etsy supplier, silk ribbon from the closed M & J trimming, and grosgrain ribbon from

Wow what fun I had yesterday at the ‘Foraged to Fabric’ natural dyeing workshop on location in the Temescal Regional Rec area in Oakland. I was so impressed with ‘s knowledge of fungi and mushrooms. She gave us some turkey tail tea from her company, .teas. We hiked for a while, identifying different fungi. Then we dyed pre-mordanted linen and cotton tea towels with blackberry stems & leaves and also madder root from . It was so fascinating seeing all the different results! There were iron and baking soda baths for after-dipping. had so much knowledge about natural dyeing! My tea towel is last in this reel. And I unintentionally added a heart in my scrunched up piece! I can’t wait for the next 3 Sundays.
