Body Neutrality (noun) - the idea that you can exist without having to think too much about your body one way or another, positive or negative.

Going from ‘I do not like my body’ to ‘I love my body’ can be a stretch for a lot of people. Outwardly stating to our community that we are ‘body positive’ can make us feel like frauds on those days where we might not have such a loving outlook on our body. On the other hand, if we're focusing on body neutrality, it's a much easier space to occupy because the highs and lows are always met with the same attitude of acceptance.

I never knew the value of self-love until I suffered the extreme cost of lacking it. Most days, the storm of “not good enough” threatens to demolish the home we’ve built on the shifting sands of personal achievement and the opinions of others.

Self-love isn’t an unrealistic idea—it’s a non-negotiable. Instead of tending to the needs of others without a fleeting concern for ourselves, ask yourself how you can start treating yourself better. Celebrate your successes without criticizing them in the same breath.

Once you love and accept all aspects of yourself completely and treat yourself that way, once you become grounded and centered in your being, empowering others will come naturally.

I know that you compare yourself. I know that you size yourself up and try to sometimes fit a mold or reach a standard that you are not meant to fit or fulfill. I know that sometimes you worry about who likes you and who doesn’t. I know you worry and lose sleep over those who you can’t seem to win over. I know that you take it upon yourself to try to be accepted and wanted. I know that sometimes you feel like you aren’t enough.

Think about your day so far today. Let’s assume you woke up, took a shower, got dressed, made a cup of coffee, ate breakfast, and checked your email on your smartphone. Have you ever thought about the “behind the scenes” of all these routine activities? Where did the water come from for your shower? What kind of fuel heated the water? Who grew your coffee and what are their working conditions like? How about the milk for your cereal—what are the laws that regulate its production? Your smartphone seems completely removed from nature, but where did all of those components inside the phone come from?

Investigating these types of questions is the entry way into understanding sustainability. As we will see, seemingly mundane activities are embedded in webs of relationships with the Earth, materials, energy, plants and animals, and people all over the world. Sustainability is a way of thinking that allows us to get under the surface of things and see connections in enlightening and sometimes surprising ways.
