A very fresh batch of Midway Sashikos is heading up to Highland Park this afternoon. Made of a 14 ounce yarn dyed Sashiko from Japan that has been rinse to soften up the fabric and remove all shrinkage. The Midway is inspired by the M42 HBT uniform, one of the most commonly issued uniforms for American soldiers in World War II. The boxy fit and oversized pockets were practical necessities of a functional wartime garment. Viewed through a civilian lens, these design elements lend themselves to a distinctive and stylish garment. Available in sizes small through xxl and proudly cut and sewn in Southern California.

The Aloha Tigers are back in action just in time for summer. Made of a screen printed linen fabric from Japan that has been rinsed to remove all shrinkage. This is our take on the classic Hawaiian or Aloha shirt. These shirts were first introduced in the 1930s and gained popularity in the 50s. The original aloha shirts were made of recycled kimono fabric. In order to perfect the fit, we researched a good friend’s collection of vintage shirts spanning across several time periods.

The High Low is the newest addition to the Freenote line of denim jackets. Taking inspiration from the ranchers and cowboys of our hometown San Juan Capistrano, we took the classic type III pattern and made it our own with a cropped, boxy fit that pairs perfectly with high-waisted denim or chinos. We added our signature slanted pockets for a bit of western flair and deleted the welted hand warmer pockets in favor of integrated pockets that are part of the seam itself. We outfitted the High Low in our custom 14 ounce Broken Twill, the first custom denim that we developed with our friends from Yoshiwa Mills in Japan. The zig zag weave pattern of the fabric was originally developed to combat twisting due to shrinkage. When washed cold and hung to dry, shrinkage is minimal with this fabric, but the weave results in unique fades and an ultra-soft hand feel when broken in after a solid month of wear. Like all of our garments the High Low Broken Twill is proudly cut and sewn in the USA.

Introducing our latest Jove shirt, now available in a fresh offering of colors. The Jove is our take on a 1960s-style short sleeve shirt-jac, hitting that sweet spot with a clean, jacket-style shirt look. At 4 ounces, this Japanese rayon is the perfect weight for the summer heat. This version features two chest flap pockets with custom mother of pearl buttons, button tabs at the side waist, and full-length back pleats, offering a timeless look with plenty of mobility. The fabric has been rinsed and pre-shrunk, giving it a true to size fit right out of the box. As always, Freenote Cloth is proudly cut and sewn in the USA.

It is starting to feel like summer over here at Freenote Headquarters in San Juan Capistrano. The Dayton is our interpretation of a classic industrial or garage style shirt. Drawing inspiration from vintage examples dating back to the 1950’s, it features a camp collar, double pockets, and metal reproduction buttons from Japan. For the fabric we went with a 5 ounce yarn-dyed stripe made of 70% cotton and 30% linen, a blend that is perfectly durable yet light and comfortable for the warmer days ahead.

Our latest leather release includes two styles both made of one of the most unique horsehides we have ever used. The 1.1 mm front quarter natural horsehide from is veg tanned following the slow old traditional tanning method. The leather is waxed using “sego” wax which is a secret recipe developed from animal fat and natural oil. The leather is hand waxed with a sponge as the final part of process which takes about ten days to let the leather completely absorb the wax. The shiny transparent effect is due to the wax and oil content. There are not any solvents or chemical products applied to finish any hide.
