Grand Country Quilters Winter 2021 Mystery Stitch-Along
Week #11 – Mystery Solved! Introducing - “Peace”

Yippee! You made it to the “Big Reveal”. This week we will sew all the strips together to finish the Quilt top. My Mom named this quilt … “Peace”

First – collect the following;
2 – Borders – Week # 8
5 – Strip of Squares – Week # 9
6 – Strip of Big Blocks – Week # 10

Putting the Quilt Top Together –
The top will be completed using the 13 “Strips” that are listed above.
They are laid out in the following sequence.
Border, Big Block, Squares, Big, Square, Big, Square, Big, Square, Big, Square, Big, Border.
BUT – you will need to pay attention to those Safety Pins that we used to mark our Strips so that the Dark Grey pairs up with the Dark Grey – and the Dark Blue pairs up with the Medium or Dark Blue to complete the “border chevron” pattern.
To make this extra easy – we’re going to sew some of those strips together first.

1st – sew the 3 “Strip of Squares” with the pin in the Dark Grey /Bright Gold flying geese and the 3 “Strip of Big Blocks” with the pin in the Dark Grey corner.
Press to the “Strip of Squares”.
Make 3 “Dark Grey/Bright Gold” units.

2nd – sew the 2 “Strip of Squares” with the pin in the Medium Blue/Dull Gold and 2 of the “Strip of Big Blocks” with the pin in the Dark Blue corner.
Press to the “Strip of Squares”.
Make 2 “Dark Blue/ Dull Gold” units.

3rd- sew the Border with a pin in the Dark Blue corner to a Med Blue/Dull Gold strip matching the Dark Blue triangles as pictured. Press to the border strip.
Label this “last Border strip”.

4th – add the Border with the pin in the Dark Grey corner to a “Dark Grey/ Bright Gold” unit.
Press to Border.

5th – sew a “Dark Blue/ Dull Gold” unit to this new unit.
Press to the “Strip of Squares”.

6th, 7th and 8th – Next you will sew on the “Dark Grey/Bright Gold” unit. Repeat this pattern alternating the “Dark Blue/Dull Gold” and “Dark Grey/ Bright Gold” units always pressing to the “Strip of Squares” after each addition.

9th – add the “last Border strip” made in step 3.
Press to the “Strip of Squares”.

10th – Stay-stitch around the edge of the quilt top (1/8” from the outside edge). This keeps the seams from popping open. I like to do this before the “Final Press” to hold those edges together.

Congratulations! You did it! You have made “Peace”. What a good feeling that brings to your life – even in quilt form. I have really enjoyed sharing this fun quilt with you. I hope that you learned something new and had a really good time participating in this Mystery. And my apologies about week #5 – Flying Geese – it was a killer week, but I bet you can make them in your sleep now! I still love Flying Geese!

Please stay safe and healthy and we’ll see you next time….
Enjoy!

Grand Country Quilters Winter 2021 Mystery Stitch-Along
Week #10 – Strip of Big Blocks This week we will be putting the remaining parts together to make 6 strips. The “Big Reveal” will be NEXT WEEK! Also, if you still have “parts” leftover after you have made the “Strips of Big Blocks” you can add them to your scrap bin…there are always extra nuts and bolts leftover....right? Grand Country Quilters Winter 2021 Mystery Stitch-Along
Week #9 – Strip of Squares This week we will be putting different parts together to make 5 strips. The “Big Reveal” will be Week #11…so you’re almost done! Also, don’t worry if you still have “parts” leftover – we will be using them later. There are lots of helpful photos in the instructions found on our website.
I’ve also provided the last Extra Credit project made from the “thread catchers” you’ve been making.

5 - Flying Geese – Week #5– Dark Grey/Bright Gold labeled “5”
25 - Chevron Strips – Week #6

Making the Strips- Make 5 – measures 4 ½” x 60 ½”
TIPS – the “Blue/Gold” square will always be next to the Dark Grey of the Chevron Strip and the “Cream/Gold” square will always be next to the Blue of the Chevron Strips.
Always press towards the Chevron Strips.
You may notice that the layout pattern is repeated half way through…but I have listed each addition.

*EXTRA CREDIT * Step 5 *
*” Thread Catcher” a Star *
* 11 3/4" x 14 1/4” … before Borders *
You will need…
40 @ 1 ¾” x 1 ¾” Med Blue/ Dull Gold Half Square Triangle Thread Catchers.
10 @ 1 ¾” x 1 ¾” Dull Gold Squares
49 @ 1 ¾” x 1 ¾” Medium Blue Squares
**Borders (use whatever scraps you have leftover…you can adjust the width of the border to accommodate what you have. I made mine – 2 @ 2 ½” x 15” and 2 @ 2 ½” x 16”.. then I measured through the middle to find the correct size. The 15”strips will be measured through the 14 ¼” side – trim to fit. Sew on and press to the border. Now lay the 16” borders on the middle and trim to fit. Sew on and press to the border.

Refer to the photo and make the required number of strips EXACTLY as shown. Pay careful attention to the angle of the triangles. Press the seams to the solid squares.
Then lay out the strips following the second photo – the “B” strip is flipped in 2 spots.
Now– sew the strips together pressing these seams open.
Add your borders (see notes about borders).
Quilt, bind and Enjoy!

03/20/2021

Grand Country Quilters Winter 2021 Mystery Stitch-Along
Week #8 – Blocks and Borders – Oh Boy!
This week we will put a “Block” together and make two of the Border strips – I have divided the instructions into two parts to make it easier. And don’t worry if you still have “parts” leftover – we will be using them later. Be sure to visit our website to get the instruction with all of the "how-to" photos.
Let’s start with the Block first.
We will sew some of the Flying Geese blocks from Week #5 to some of the Square in a Square block we made in Week #2.
We need to make those center strips first – then we can add a Single Chevron to each side to form our Block.
First – collect the following “labeled” – “1A” & “1B”
“1A – 30 – Square in a square – Cream/Light Blue
“1B” - 60 – Flying Geese – Light Grey and Dark Grey
60 – Single Chevrons from Week #7 – Light Grey and Dark Grey

Making the Center strip
Each “Center” strip will use two Flying Geese and one Square in a square. I suggest that you make one first, check your ¼” seam allowance and adjust so that the finished size is 4 ½” x 8 ½”.
· Refer to the photo and lay out your Flying Geese and Square
in a square to form the Center strip.
· Pin Flying Geese to secure its placement.
· Sew the Flying Geese in place.
· Press to the Flying Geese block.
· Sew the remaining Flying Geese in place.
· Press to the Flying Geese block.
· Measures 4 ½” x 8 ½”.
· Make 30.

Putting the Block together
· Refer to the photo and lay out your Center strip and two
Single Chevrons to form the Block
· Nesting your seams together – sew the Single Chevrons to
Center.
· Both seams will be pressed to the Center strip.
TIP – to help your seams stay flat and straight
o Spray with Starch.
o Press seam flat.
o While it’s still warm – open and finger press the bulky sections
flat.
o Press again with hot iron in up and down motion – never side to
side!
· Repeating the steps – sew on the remaining Single Chevron.
· Measures 8 ½” x 8 ½”.
· Make 30.

Making two Borders
Now don’t let this scare you…just read through the instructions first and you will see how easy it really is. Unfortunately, the Dark Grey and Dark Blue, and the Golds are so close in color that it’s hard to photograph them to pick up a sharp contrast – so you will need to check each of your “parts” before you sew it in place.

What you will need-
Week #3 – Half Square Triangles – 2 Dull Gold/Dark Blue and
2 Bright Gold/Dark Grey (labeled “10”)
Week #5 – Flying Geese – 4 Dull Gold/Dark Blue (labeled “6”),
4 Bright Gold/Dark Grey (labeled “5”)
Week #7 – Single Chevrons -5 with Dark Blue on the right hand
side and 5 w/ Dark Grey on the right hand side.

Each border has the same number of “parts” – but you will start off each strip differently. One with the Dull Gold/Dark Blue Half Square Triangle and one with the Bright Gold/ Dark Grey Half Square Triangle. Put a Safety pin in this first Half Square Triangle – this help me to find the beginning block.

Notice how all the “Gold” triangles are on one side and all the “Blue” triangles are on the other? Look for the chevron pattern to zig-zag through the border.

Also – as you lay your parts out – remember that Dark Grey will be next to Dark Grey and Dark Blue will be next to Medium Blue.

Lay out the borders first before you sew them together - refer to photo and place in this order….

SC = Single Chevron, FG = Flying Geese, HST = Half Square Triangle

1st Border (Bright HST, Single Chevron, Dull FG, SC, Bright FG, SC,
Dull FG, SC, Bright FG, SC, Dull HST)
2nd Border (Dull HST, Single Chevron, Bright FG, SC, Dull FG, SC,
Bright FG, SC, Dull FG, SC, Bright HST)

Sew the parts together.
Press the seams away from the “Single Chevrons”.
Make 2.
Measures 2 ½” x 60 ½”
That's all for this Week #8 unless you are working on the Extra Credit Mystery… Instructions are below.

Please stay safe and healthy and we’ll see you next Saturday. I think that we will have 3 more sessions…just to make it easier on ourselves.

*EXTRA CREDIT * Step 4 * Finishing *
*Aqua Gold Thread Catcher * 21” x 21” *

Putting the Quilt together – I made a small quilt…but this would also be a great pillow!

You will need…
40 @ 3” x 3” blocks you made Week #6 (see photo),
Gold – 4 @ 3” x 16 (I cut 2 from Dull Gold and 2 from Bright Gold)
Blue binding – 5 @ 2 ¼” x width of Fat Quarter (21”) wait to cut your binding until you cut for the other Extra Credit Mystery as it uses some of the Medium Blues.

· Sew 4 of the 3” x 3” block together (with the Gold triangles
towards the center of the square) to make 9 blocks.
Measures 5 ½” x 5 ½”
· Lay out in 3 rows of 3 and sew Center together – measures
16” x 16”.
TIP – if you are going to Hand Quilt your top – press these seams open! Any time you feel the need to press a seam open – do it! You’re the boss.
· Sew a Gold border to top and bottom sides.
· Press to the border.
· Sew the remaining 4 blocks to the other two Gold border
strips – pay attention to the placement of the Gold triangle –
you want them all to face towards the Center.
· Press to Gold.
· Sew the last two borders on.
· Press to the Border.
· Quilt as desired.

*EXTRA CREDIT *- Step 3
That’s your assignment for this week…and I’m sure that you still want to keep sewing! Did you finish your little 3” four patch blocks from Week #6? If you want to see a couple of layouts to inspire you to keep a sewing them– You can check them out in the instructions on the website. Or you can play around with them and come up with something completely different. You’re the boss. I’ll show you mine next week….along with a glimpse of the Dark Blue/Gold triangles thread catcher “project”.
Please stay safe and healthy and we’ll see you next Saturday. Have you figured out the quilt design yet? I hope not – I’m doing my best to keep you guessing.

Grand Country Quilters Winter 2021 Mystery Stitch-Along
Week #6 – Chevron Strips
This week we’ll be sewing some of the “Flying Geese” blocks from Week 5 with the Hourglass blocks we made Week 4 to make 49 Chevron Strips. It will create a Light Grey Chevron and a Light Blue Chevron. This task will not take as much time as some of our “weekly assignments” so you can get a chance to get caught up if you have fallen behind and work on the Extra Credit project.
Remember to go to our website to get the printable version that included photos of all the steps.

First – collect the following “labeled” 2A, 2B, & 2C;
2A - 49 – Flying Geese –Light Grey and Dark Grey
2B - 49 – Hourglass blocks
2C - 49 – Flying Geese –Light Blue and Medium Blue
*you will have some extra parts – we just need to make 49 so pick your favorite ones.

Making the Chevron Strips-Each Chevron strip will use one Hourglass block, one Light Blue/Medium Blue Flying Geese and one Light Grey/Dark Grey Flying Geese.
· Position the Light Blue triangle of the Hourglass block with
the Light Blue/Med Blue Flying Geese. This will create the
Light Blue “Chevron”.
· Sew in place.
· Press to the Flying Geese block. (see TIP)
TIP – to get the bulk of the seam to lay flat it helps to fingerpress it in place.
1st- press theseam before you open it. (stack & press
method shown)
2nd – while it’s still warm open the seam and finger press
that point flat.
3rd – now lightly spray with starch and press with a hot
iron.

· Position the Light Grey triangle of the Hourglass block with
the Light Grey/Dark Grey Flying Geese. This will create the
Light Grey “Chevron”.
· Sew in place.
· Press to the Flying Geese block.
· Repeat steps to make 49 “Chevron Strips”
measuring 4 ½” x 8 ½”.

*EXTRA CREDIT *- Step 2
That’s your assignment for this week…so let’s work on those
EXTRA CREDIT Half Square Triangle “thread catchers” we started in Week #2. Have you finished sewing them all together yet?
If you are ready to go - let’s take the Light Blue/Cream HST and the Gold/Cream HST and make 40 four-patch blocks as shown in the photo. “Pop” the seams when you press.
They will measure 3” x 3”.

Please stay safe and healthy and we’ll see you next Saturday.

02/27/2021

Grand Country Quilters Winter 2021 Mystery Stitch-Along
Week #5 – Flying Geese Blocks
This week you’ll be making “Flying Geese” blocks… if you haven't used this method before be sure to go to our website and get the pdf version of the instructions. I have included many photos of the steps. www.grandcountryquilters.com Just clip on the Stitch Along 2021 tab. We also have a few kits left if you are interested.
This week you will need to make the following;
172 – Light Grey/Dark Grey
24 – Light Blue/ Dark Blue
52 – Light Blue/Medium Blue
12 – Medium Blue/Dull Gold
12 – Dark Grey/ Bright Gold

To make a Flying Geese Block - just follow the steps below. There are 5 different color combos that you will need to make. One 5 ¼” square and four 2 7/8” squares will yield 4 Flying Geese blocks. Make one “set” of Flying Geese blocks first so that you can get the hang of it and also to check your accuracy – if you’re happy with the results, you’re ready to begin sewing.

First – collect the following 2 7/8” x 2 7/8” and 5 ¼” x 5 ¼” squares “labeled”;
“1B” & “2A” – 172 @ 2 7/8” Light Grey/ 43 @ 5 ¼” Dark Grey
“7” – 24 @ 2 7/8” Light Blue/ 6 @ 5 ¼” Dark Blue
“2C” – 52 @ 2 7/8” Light Blue/ 13 @ 5 ¼ Medium Blue
“6” – 12 @ 2 7/8” Medium Blue/ 3 @ 5 ¼" Dull Gold
“5” – 12 @ 2 7/8” Dark Grey/ 3 @ 5 ¼” Bright Gold

Second – make “Flying Geese” blocks
TIP - make one block first and check for accuracy.
· Iron your fabrics if needed
· You will use one 5 ¼” square and four 2 7/8” squares to
make a “set” of four Flying Geese.
· Draw a line corner to corner on the wrong side of the 2 7/8”
squares.
· Place two 2 7/8” squares on a 5 ¼” x 5 ¼” square (right sides
together) lining up the drawn line. Pin.
· Stitch ¼” on both sides of the drawn line… but not too scant
or you’ll lose the “tips” of the triangle.
· Cut on the drawn line.
· Press to the small triangles.. (use that “press and stack”
method).
· Place the next two 2 7/8” squares on the corner of these two
units – refer to photo.
· Stitch ¼” on both sides of the drawn line.
· Cut on the drawn line.
· Press towards the small triangle.
· You now have 4 Flying Geese!
They should measure 2 ½” x 4 ½”. There is very little excess fabric to trim away..but you do need to trim them up.

TIP - see the “tips” at the top of the triangle? – if you don’t have the ¼” seam allowance – then the scant ¼” seam you used to sew the squares on was too scant and you need to adjust your ¼” seam.

TRIMMING - USING THE 4 ½” RULER
· Trim the Flying Geese to 2 ½” x 4 ½”.
· Place the ruler on the block –
o Line up the 2 ¼” mark with the center “tip” of the
triangle. Make sure that you have a ¼” seam allowance.
o Line up the bottom of the block with the 2 ½” markings.
· Once you have your block all lined up - Trim the 3 sides…it’s
usually just those “dog ear” tips. If you need to trim up the
bottom of the block – just reposition your ruler and trim.

If you don’t have a 4 ½” square up ruler – any ruler will do. You just need the 4 ½”, 2 ½”, and 2 ¼” marked so you can refer to these points easily. You can draw these markings on your ruler using a permanent marker. These marks can be removed later with rubbing alcohol.

That’s your assignment for this week – I know that you have a lot of Flying Geese to make this week - but you can do it! Next week we will start to sew some of our “parts” together – get excited!

Please stay safe and healthy and we’ll see you next Saturday!

Enjoy!
