“The Best Boy”

Ash meant everything to me. My mom said I gave him a good life, but it was truly him that gave me one.

We spent an amazing 10 years together. We traveled the country a couple of times, lived deep in the woods with just the two of us, and went through so much of life side by side.

In the last year of your life, you got a mom and a sister, and I’m so thankful you got to know what it was like to have a whole family that loved you.

Thank you, Ash, for being the most amazing dog and my best friend. There is no better boy than you.

We love you. Rest in peace my little Aviation Survival Hound ❤️

Rescue Swimmer #362, Jay McChesney, passed away at the age of 55. Jay dedicated approximately 25 years to the U.S. Coast Guard before continuing his career as a critical care flight nurse. By all accounts, he was an incredible man, deeply respected, admired, and loved by everyone who knew him.

A few days ago, Jay’s longtime friend Kevin shared something that really touched me.

Through a generous donation to Tails of Valor, an organization that trains service dogs for military members and first responders, a new service dog was given the name Jay in his honor.

Kevin recently stopped by the training center to check in on him and dropped off a couple of Rescue Swimmer patches for Jay’s vest. He said the pup is already doing great in training and still has about a year of “Swimmer School” left to go. ❤️

I can’t think of a more fitting tribute to someone who spent his life serving others. One day, this dog named Jay will go on to serve someone who needs him most.

Fair winds, Jay. Your legacy lives on.

Jeff Tunks was the first Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross. Hearing him tell the story firsthand is something you’ll never forget.

On December 10, 1987, Coast Guard Air Station Sitka launched an HH-3F into some of the worst weather imaginable after the fishing vessel Bluebird began sinking off Alaska.

With 25–30 foot seas, near-zero visibility, and wind gusts reaching 70 knots, the crew made repeated attempts to hoist a father and his 6-year-old son from the water, but the conditions made it impossible.

Rescue Swimmer ASM2 Jeff Tunks volunteered to deploy. Battling violent seas, he reached the survivors, helped secure them in the rescue basket, and ensured they were safely hoisted into the helicopter. During his own recovery, he was slammed through a massive wave, losing his mask and snorkel and injuring his back before finally being brought aboard.

For his extraordinary courage in conditions unlike any previously faced by Coast Guard rescue swimmers, Jeff became the first Coast Guard Rescue Swimmer to be awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross—the nation’s highest peacetime award for heroism at the time.
